If I can ease the transition to college and anxiety for even just one incoming freshman, I will have done my job.

For anyone, college is an incredibly intimidating environment to enter. The people, the classes, and the change of scenery can be pretty overwhelmingly no matter who you are. Although we have teachers and advisors that are here to help us navigate these obstacles, I've always believed that guidance is better received when it’s coming from someone who you can relate to and understand, and I believe peer mentors can fill that role. I became a peer mentor because I feel like the mission of this program truly reflects my values and because I want to use my experiences to help make a difference in the lives of others.

I'm choosing to be a peer mentor because I know how big an impact a good mentor can make. In my freshman year I was lucky enough to have a mentor who probably changed the course of my life. She got me into extracurriculars and assured me that it's okay for things not to be easy. I think without her I wouldn't have been able to get through my freshman year. By being a mentor this year I hope to do what my mentor did for me for someone else.

My first semester at Texas A&M was tough for me because I didn’t know how to deal with being homesick and missing my family. Which is why I’m really thankful that I was able to meet my senior academic peer mentor and my science advisor during my freshmen year. I genuinely think that both my peer mentor and advisor influenced the way I grew as a person in college. I say this because they did a wonderful job mentoring. I want to be able to make the process a little bit better for someone who is struggling. I want to help in any way that I can because it makes a difference to know there is someone that believes in you. I want to help them not only in the academic side of the struggles they might have, but also empathize with any emotions they are feeling. Having someone listen to the situations they might encounter makes a big difference in the attitude they have towards a new challenge.

I signed up to be a peer mentor because mentoring is in my blood. I have always been a helpful person since I was small. I began by helping my mom in the kitchen, then joining the Girl Scouts and beginning my journey in service. When I got older, I became the friend all my friends would come to for help with homework or advice, joined National Charity League and volunteered more than 275 hours in it alone, and served a role like an older sister to many younger girls on my club and high school soccer teams. When I came to college, I joined a ton of honors programs and organizations, and continued to be a mentor to younger students. As part of my freshman year, I had an amazing peer mentor that made me consider being one, but it wasn't until I served as a Rho Gamma and SET Leader in my sorority and Texas A&M Panhellenic my sophomore/junior year where I realized just how good of a mentor I had been throughout my life. I had already been serving the same role in my sorority and other organizations, but never fully realizing the impact I had made or the mentoring role I had served. With that, I realized the difference I could make to these new students and the benefits they could also receive from my participation. I have such a unique experience at Texas A&M, and variety of different things I have done on campus, and usually can answer any question or find the answer to it.

This was because I had no idea about all of the opportunities Texas A&M offered not only for academics, but also student organizations to join. Similarly, I want to fill that role as a mentor in this program. I feel that I could quickly deal with any situation that is thrown at me. I have insights and knowledge about how to be successful in the classroom whether that be about studying or overcoming a fear to talk to a professor. Similarly, to my previous mentor, I feel that I could fill this role and make the transition to college less stressful for freshmen.

I’m a first generation college student. For the past three years in undergrad, I’ve struggled due to lack of knowledge of the resources available on campus. Additionally, I often felt a little out of place in the beginning of my freshman year. Luckily, I had a peer mentor that I considered a big sister to help me out. She is still present in my life. I want to give back to others the way she looked out for me. As a senior, I’ve been through almost all of it so I hope I can be someone they depend on and come to without feeling judged.

When I came in my freshman year I was one of the students who wasn't particularly interested in getting information from my SCEN course. I felt that I could manage on my own, and struggled to adapt my freshman year as a result. I immediately knew that I wanted to be a peer mentor to help the freshman, like myself, become more receptive to the material we will be sharing so that they don't experience the same problems I did. Moving to a college away from home can be extremely difficult, especially when it's as big as A&M is. I want to be a part of the group that helps make that transition easy.

I chose to apply to be a peer mentor because, I remember feeling like I didn't belong in the biology department after my first semester. My peer mentor believed in my potential even when I didn't, and showed me that I can be a biology major. I remember thinking after making a C on my first biology exam that I was never going to make it in my major. The feeling of failing an exam after spending so many hours studying and preparing was one I became quite familiar with. Bri, my peer mentor, took the time to show me how to study efficiently to become successful. Bri was more than a peer mentor, she became a close friend. I remember she was always there to celebrate the wins, and help comfort me during the losses. She truly made me feel so welcomed not just in the biology department, but at Texas A&M. She showed me constant reassurance that things will work out in the end. Bri taught me that hard work always pays off in the end. As a peer mentor, I want to guide my mentees with the same unconditional kindness that Bri showed me. I want to reassure them that things will work out in the end, and a C on a biology 111 exam won't stop you from going to medical school.

My freshman year I was started school and I was a little overwhelmed. So many classes and assignments and for the first time everything didn't come so easy as it once did. Your professors flood you with so many resources such as the SPLC, SI, on campus tutoring, etc... I had no idea where to start. My peer mentor and other upperclassmen helped guide me and helped my become a better student that used his time efficiently. So last year when I was a peer mentor I was more experienced and it was gratifying to be able to help others who were once in my same shoes. So I am super excited to be a year more wiser and have a new class of freshman.

Just a few months ago I reflected on my why. By the end of the semester I knew my why I was a peer mentor was to help create community for freshmen. This personal goal of mine has only gotten stronger. COVID really sucked (still does), but these freshmen have the chance at a semi-normal year. There last year of high school was most likely, something they didn’t want, and they are ready. These freshmen are ready for community, for college, for classes, and for friends. It’s been too long that we have been looking at one another through a screen and I can’t wait for in person. Another reason my why has grown is because of the internship I am in right now. I researched student organizations and one of my findings was that community is important. The thing that made the student organizations so great for individuals was community, the sense of belonging. I hope to make a community this year in Hullabaloo U.

Coming into a completely new environment like Texas A&M is stressful and overwhelming, but with a bit of guidance it becomes a lot less scary. With the help of my peer mentor, I was encouraged to go to campus events and join student organizations where I would find my place, and so as a peer mentor I want to pass on this experience which my past mentor left me to new students.

Why be peer mentor? Why be a peer mentor when I struggle with my own issues? Why help others when I myself need help sometimes?
Because not everyone shares the same struggles. I have overcome struggles that affect many freshman, and letting them know that there are others who struggle in similar ways can be a huge relief. Because knowing that you are not alone in dealing with mental health issues, home issues, and other struggles is sometimes enough to encourage you to continue, and encouragement to ask for help if you need it.

I had a fantastic mentor when I was a freshman. She really helped me in my chemistry classes, and she helped me feel like I had found a home at A&M. This school was not my first choice, and I can understand that perspective. In addition, I was not aware of all the resources A&M had for its students, until my mentor filled me in! I want to ensure that freshmen know those resources exist and reach out to them if they need/want them. I want to "pass it back Ags!" If I can help just one student feel like they belong, then I will feel like I will have achieved my goal!

As a Peer Mentor I have gotten this opportunity and countless others to make an impact daily on their life while I have found they impact me daily. Getting to be that support system for them and offer my help in a selfless-service manner has brought me so much joy and passion to continue being a helping hand to as many as I can while also welcoming to the friendliest university of them all.

My why for becoming a peer mentor started my freshman year here at Texas A&M. I remember feeling overwhelmed by all the new resources available to me. I was stressed enough trying to figure out my classes but trying to get involved and use all the resources available was daunting. That is when I was introduced to Hullabaloo U. My peer mentor Caroline always made sure to tell me about organizations and clubs she thought I would fit well in and always sent me links to resources I desperately needed. Caroline made me realize that I wanted to be able to mentor and help others with the knowledge I now have. I strongly believe everyone should have a mentor in their life and I want to be that role model/support system for freshman just learning how to navigate college. - Madison Lowrey

Back when I was a freshman myself, my transition into the college environment at Texas A&M was fairly rough during the first two weeks of classes. I struggled to mentally cope with exam or quiz grades that were not on par with my expectations and was constantly anxious about my overall course grades throughout my first semester. Here I am now, fully equipped with the knowledge of what I should expect, all accessible resources on campus, and academic strategies that give me peace of mind at the start of each semester. This is all thanks to Peer Teachers, Teaching Assistants, and Peer Mentors that helped me along the way on my college journey thus far. With that in mind, I want to utilize the wisdom and experiences I gained from them and pass them on to incoming Aggie freshmen. I also feel quite passionate about helping out people who generally have mental struggles. If I could positively impact even just one student's academic success/experiences, that accomplishment would make both me and my mentee feel happy and fulfilled - permanently!
