There are different experiences between teachers, grade level, elementary and high school. An educator could have class for one amount of time and do things one way, and the next teacher has a different way they do things. Some youth use SeeSaw as their assignment platforms, other youth not so much. Google Classroom is another one people use. They become witness to more things, whether its a relative getting exposed to COVID or having family/friends who fell to COVID...experiencing COVID themselves sometimes. Our youth live in a zip code (94621) that have some of the highest rates at times, and some families are still not quarantining the way they should be from other relatives or making their youths wear masks regularly. I think single parent households who depend on family and others to care for their kids are really feeling some of this stress. They don't have the luxury to isolate. They don't have the capacity to make sure their older youths are staying home, doing all their work all the time if the parent works a lot. I see our 5th graders taking on some of caring for siblings during our after school zoom. Sometimes home environments are loud and can be distracting, especially with large families or younger youth. The projects we've been doing, especially our last one that was SEL centered called Transformative Heroes Project, was really significant because we were able to support youth one on one in art and mental health at a time when their schools were doing no direct contact at all. Many of our youth have everything they need, but parents do have a struggle. Some of our youth though, really need a lot more and have a shortage of safe places to go if they are of a house that isn't very peaceful for them.
