According to U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services, there's 10 step to follow when applying for naturalization.
These include:
1) Establish if you are already a U.S. citizen. Such as, if your parents were born here and you were born in another country.
2) Look over the naturalization eligibility worksheet to determine if you qualify to become a citizen.
3) Download the form N-400 to know what documents are needed for applying. If living outside the U.S., take 2 passport photos.
4) After submitting the form, USCIS will send a receipt validating that the form was accepted.
5) If necessary, attend the biometrics appointments.
6) Finish the process by being present for an interview.
7) Based on your interview, USCIS will determine if you're eligible for naturalization.
8) If your Form N-400 is approved, you'll receive a notice then take the Oath of Allegiance (9) to the U.S.
10) As a citizen, properly execute rights and responsibilities.
Although the process may seem easy, it takes year for one to even be granted residency in America while entering with a visa. Residency is the most common needed factor for naturalization for those whom may not meet the criteria included in the Form-N400. The interview includes being asked a series of questions about American and its history. Some of which Americans may not know the answer to. The application process itself may take from 6 months to a year, or more.

How is naturalization affected by Trumps plans?

Trump's Executive Order was the biggest concern for those coming from the 7 countries barred in the order. The Order banned those with green cards from entering the country but did not stop them from being able to gain U.S. citizenship. USCIS is still accepting N-400 applications from citizens of those countries and will continue to do so, even with the Executive Order being active. Currently, there is no plans to prevent green-card holders from being naturalized.
Trump, however, is pushing to prevent those he calls "anchor babies" from gaining U.S. citizenship upon birth. "Anchor babies" are those born from parents who are in the country illegally. Congress would need to pass a bill to overturn the 14th Amendment with critique from the Supreme Court. Legislators, along with Trump, who do not believe that the 14th Amendment applies to those with parents that are in America illegally are pushing for that bill to be passed. If the bill is passed, those babies would not be naturalized upon birth and would have to be put under the naturalization process after their parents due so for themselves. About 8% of the 3.9 million births a year in America falls under the category of being anchor babies. Thus meaning that about 300,000 babies will be prevented from naturalization every year. Not only will they be affected but so will their parents.
