Community, Media and Technology affect adolescent behaviors tremendously. " School is typically the largest and most important institution with which young people are involved, and it is a primary context for their development. " (pg 6). School is a very prominent community for most youth considering they spend a large portion of their day there and are surrounded by people their own age group. " There is something about living in a poor neighborhood that places adolescents at risk for engaging in risk behaviors. " (pg 7). Growing up in poverty can affect a child's brain development and sadly there is no easy fix to this tremendous problem. " Social learning theory, which has also been applied in the study of media violence, suggests that when individuals see a behavior portrayed in a positive way, they have a tendency to imitate and adopt it. " (pg 8). It's very important that media not only show the staggering number of horrific things by the positive things that happen everyday in this world. One of my friends that I met in my neighborhood was taken and out back with her drug abusing mother where she not only was able to overcome the social stigma of "smart isn't cool" but she maintains a 4.0 GPA. Her sister on the other hand is not so motivated and looks to be going down the path that her mothers on because she was so young when she moved back in with her mother she doesn't know any different from the negative things her mother does. This is not only a negative impact but a sad one at that.
