This represents Billy's growth and development and strength. This is the first time we see Billy after he has left for the ballet school. He is no longer a little boy, rather a young man. The light behind him is similar to the light in the hall. This shot highlights his freedom, and success as he undergoes new challenges and experiences.
Mid shot - gives context as well character detail - expressions/build. This shows us he has achieved his dream - ballet in the background and a grown man.
Theme: Growth / Identity Human Experience: People can be who they want to be - regardless of 'societal expectations'.

Motif - leaping

The film starts and ends with the same motif in which is Billy leaping on his bed and Billy leaping in the air. Motif (like repetition) stresses an importance aspect with the text - in the film it is 'liberation'
Theme: Self expression
Human experience: people need to be able to express themselves freely in order to truly have a sense of identity. In the film, Billy initially hides this form of self expression because of fear (from his family/community) because there is a community stereotype of what it means to be a man/male.

Music / Extended Metaphor - Swan Lake

Swan lake is the ballet story that Mrs Wilkinson talks about to Billy when they are crossing the river. Billy's 'leap' of faith allows him to move beyond Durham 'into the world' of
his passion, Ballet.
Music: builds to a crescendo (climax) and that's how the film ends - on a high.
Extended Metaphor: The story is about a young swan that only feels free at night - that is the handsome prince attempts to rescue the trapped female from the clutches of evil. While the Prince meets a tragic end by leaping into the lake with Odette - same as Billy.
Themes: self expression / identity / class divide / parental expectations
Human expression: the realisation of reaching our dreams through determination and persistence; as well as the importance of having key people in your life to help you achieve your dreams.

1 second snap to Dad's face just before Billy Leaps into the air
Editing - is a powerful way to connect ideas within a film - the relationship and the changes in people's attitudes
Theme: parent expectations / love
Human Experience: the power of love to transform you (Billy's dad was very much affected by his community - male identity / expectations) Billy's choice to dance and get out of Durham helps his dad (and others like Michael) also change and have options in their life.

* an example of both the individual and a collective human experience
* the film explores the paradox of 'freedom of choice' - miners have had their work choices taken away but they in turn take away the choice of their children - e.g. employment options/ identity. The film ending breaks finally that paradox.
* high emotions results from achieving your dreams
* high emotions from the dad who accepts Billy's life choice to be a dance
