This is an important fragrance spice used throughout South Asian cuisine. Although it may not be as common as spices such as black peppercorns and cardamon pods, its importance in various cuisines cannot be understated in the Islamic world. Due to its influence, the name is translated into American English, Spanish, and Arabic.

A page from the menu of a Chinese restaurant that specializes in Sichuan cuisine. This restaurant has a special place in my heart as it is one of the few places where I can utilize my Mandarin-speaking abilities in an outside environment. The menu is deliberately made to attract L1 Mandarin speakers as hanzi is the first option on the menu as opposed to English. As was stated by a close friend, the English translation for some of the items on the menu is somewhat incorrect, as the actual translations are usually more elegant in comparison. However, it could be argued that this is a sign that the linguistic inaccuracy is proof that the restaurant directs its focus on making authentic Sichuan food rather than focusing on fixing its pre-existing menus.

This could be seen as linguistical proof of how connected the world has become through globalization, as the same printer model could be exported to countries with these various languages with no issues in instructional translations.

My roommate, who's half Taiwanese, celebrated Chinese New Year with his family in Los Angeles. An important aspect of Chinese New Year for younger people is receiving gifts and money from their older family members. The red envelop is the traditional way to give money during the holiday and serves as a symbol of luck for the person who is receiving it.

During a recent birthday party, my friend gave me a Lego set that was Minecraft-themed. Since it is a toy that contains many small building pieces that could pose a hazard to babies, the box states in English, Spanish, and French that the toy could pose a choking hazard. This represents the importance of linguistics in child safety, as innocent toys such as this one could pose a hazard to a baby who is unaware of the possible danger.

Before leaving Taiwan, I was gifted the flag of the Taiwanese People's Party (TPP) by a friend who attended one of their political rallies. The combination of English and traditional Chinese characters displays the political awareness of linguistics amongst those in Taiwanese politics, as the country aims to achieve Mandarin-English bilingualism by 2030.
