The model minority is an expectation of how Asian Americans are supposed to act. Society expects them to be the smartest and quietest, as well as follow all of the rules. They are seen as the model for success but this comes with a pressure that can cause depression and stress on young Asian Americans. This can also lead to them being compared to other minorities, putting pressure on everyone.

The model minority myth is used to compare minority groups which does harm to the minority groups given desirable traits and the minority groups given undesirable traits.

The Model Minority Myth is the fallacy that Asian-Americans are an example of the “successful” or high achieving minority in the US. It is often used as a wedge between minority groups and serves to divide communities through the misbelief that if you “work hard” like Asians, then other groups should too. The myth is harmful for all communities of color and downplays both the historical discrimination against Asians and the many Asians that do not fit the stereotype, such as those who come from war-torn countries and refugee backgrounds as these groups have lower attainment of bachelor’s degrees, lower household incomes, etc., showing that Asian-Americans are not a monolith when the data is disaggregated.

The Model Minority Myth implies that Asians and Asian Americans should be looked up to as role models for minorities. Not only does this demean other minorities, but it also holds people to a standard created in subservience to the White majority. It also can create internal struggles for Asian Americans who may feel pressured to be "better" or more successful to live up to the standard.
