INTRODUCTION

Due to The Great Gatsby taking place in the age of the Roaring Twenties, it was clear that the influence had a huge impact on the novel overall. Throughout the whole novel, it was clear that the music that was mentioned would express different types of emotions and moods that the characters would experience in a certain scene. These songs would be indicated mostly during the parties that Gatsby would throw for the people in his neighborhood, showing that everyone at these events would be having a good time, no matter the circumstance. It would be safe to say that these songs also had an overall outcome on the character's actions as well.

Beale Street Blues by Chris Barber

ARTIST: Chris Barber

TYPE OF MUSIC: Blues

SIGNIFICANCE: "Beale Street Blues" by Chris Barber was known to be a popular songs among the masses of the white audience due to it being one of the first raw and "legitimate" blues songs that the public during this time listened to. The lyrics of the song that state "You'll find that business never ceases 'til somebody gets killed!," could be referring to Daisy and Gatsby in chapter eight of the novel. This is due to their affair that they committed which eventually got them to meet their end.

PRESENT DAY

SONG: Back to Back
ARTIST: Drake
LYRICS: "When I look back, I might be mad that I gave this attention."
This verse plays significance because both songs explain about regret and how it will usually end up in tragedy. Much like Daisy and Gatsby, they know that the affair that they are committing is a wrong thing to do, however, they decide to proceed on doing it anyway.

The Sheik of Araby by Fats Waller

ARTIST: Fats Waller

TYPE OF MUSIC: Jazz

SIGNIFICANCE: "The Sheik of Araby" by Fats Waller play a significant role in the novel due to the overall mood that it would set in a scene. Fats Waller's song would be mentioned in a scene of Nick and Jordan driving through the streets of New York, where then Jordan would tell Nick that Gatsby and Daisy used to see each other very frequently, and how Gatsby would move to Long Island in many hopes of seeing her face to face again. The song soon became popular as it took influences from early jazz bands, which became a hit in New Orleans. The lyrics in the song that read,"You'll rule this land with me," is significant due to the fact that this was what Gatsby had in mind with Daisy as he plans on leaving to Long Island. However, it is clear that this may not always conclude with a happy ending.

PRESENT DAY

SONG: Count on Me
ARTIST: Bruno Mars
LYRICS: "You can count on me like one two three," is the verse that relates to "The Sheik of Araby" by Fats Waller due to the fact that they both explain how a man will always be there for his significant other, much like Gatsby is towards Daisy.

Ain't We Got Fun by Van & Schenck

ARTIST: Van & Schenck

TYPE OF MUSIC: Known as "zesty music" or Jazz

SIGNIFICANCE: The significance that this song plays in the novel is during the scene of where Gatsby invites Daisy over to his house for the first time, and the song is mentioned when she is about to enter his home. The impact of the song and of this scene is due to the fact that this event will lead up to much more as the novel moves forward. This is only the beginning to much more in the novel. The song sets the mood of this scene, as it is very soothing, so Daisy may know about Gatsby's music taste and how "professional" he may seem as his first impression. The lyrics of the song that read, "But smiles were made, dear, for people like us," play a significant role knowing that this is the intention of Gatsby when he first laid his eyes on Daisy.

PRESENT DAY

SONG: OTW (On The Way)
ARTIST: Khalid, 6LACK, Ty Dolla $ign
LYRICS:"Put it in drive, I'll outside, I'll be on the way"
These songs are both similar due to the fact that they both explain a time where two people are meeting for the very first time, much like Daisy and Gatsby. As both of these songs continue, they explain how they are eventually happy with each other later on as they both begin to see each other more and more. However, the only difference is that in the novel, it is clear that the outcome of Daisy and Gatsby does not have the greatest ending.
