Who Am I?

If you was to ask me what is important to me as far as self, and how people identify themselves, I would say Mindset, and how you treat others. I am a black woman; African american mixed with Haitian. I am a citizen and I would consider myself middle class. Being in this country, it can sometimes be hard because of the color of your skin; especially if you are black. But yet, I don't think that defines you. I don't think that the times we live in now that it can hold you back. It's all in your mindset and how hard you are willing to work for what you want. Yeah you might have to work a little harder but all that does is show your strength. You can't be stuck in the mindset that race, religion, and any other ethic factors is the reason why you don't try or think you will fail. If you remain to think like this, you will never get to see your full potential. After all they have done to us black people and how they have treated us, I love to see us win at life. I love to see us succeed, because that just shows the world that it doesn't matter the color of your skin or your ethic background, what matters is your mindset and how you treat people; that's whats going to take you further in life. No matter if someone is treating you wrong because they are being racist or they are stereotyping you, you should still treat that person with respect and kindness because that's what defines YOU as an individual. That says a lot about who you are. But the times we live in today, the white man don't love us and neither do our own kind so I love to love a black man, because this world sure doesn't.

After watching the first video I was left angry and conflicted. Reggie Bullock's sister, who was once a boy, came out to the family wanting to be a girl, and they accepted that, cool. But what gets me angry is how she met her end. She was attacked and left in an alley for dead, in the very city I live in. DNA evidence under her fingernails that matched her attacker was used in court and still no justice was served. Shawn Oliver walks free for murder. Why? Was it because the victim was transgender? No that can't be it, right? It doesn't make sense. Mia Henderson was still a human being, a human being that chose to be who she wanted to be in face of what was to come. She knew who and what she wanted to be and for that I admire her bravery to come out because I myself am confuse on who I want to be as a person. To see someone killed for whatever the circumstance was, is senseless to me and if Mia being trans was the cause that just takes the cake . No one should be killed for existing, it's not fair and its wrong.

My name “Alexis” was pretty last minute. The doctors told my mom her whole pregnancy that she was having a boy, so she had named me Isaac. But when I came out they congratulated her with a girl and she was so confused. My mom didn't have a girls name picked out so her best friends mom was there and said, "Name her Alexis". And that's how I got my name. Growing up, I knew so many little girls with the exact same name as me. In 8th grade there were 6 of us!

i feel as tho america is just one big melting pot. i feel that they came to the native Americans and stole their land then had people from around the world come. america doesn't have a culture, they really don't even have their own food except hot dogs. lol. nor do they even have their own religion. i'm just not a big american fan. yeah there's opportunity here for school and jobs but that's about it. they country runs off of money and is greedy. the country is a big melting pot made up of others cultures.

Final Class Reflection

Even though I had a lot going on this summer with my child's father and court, I still feel like I have learned a lot in these last 6 weeks. Professor Rudham had taught different strategies. The biggest thing I have learned was to type all my notes and rough draft because it saves time. I have struggled with that for awhile because I am so used to writing all my thoughts down. so she has definitely helped me over come that obstacle and help prepare me for future classes. I have also learned so much when it comes to black history and America in general. My favorite essay was the "This is America" essay. I liked it a lot because I have so many feelings about America and so many thoughts on it. I was really able to voice my opinion and back it up with all the info I had read in the readings. Now my least favorite was the last essay, the "Culture Analysis". I struggled al lot with that essay just because it was a different style then the norm, but with my professors help I was able to pull through. My professor really knows her stuff and she made every unit so interesting! I wish we was able to go on a field trip lol but either way it was a very interesting class. I would recommend this class to anyone but most importantly I would recommend professor Rudham to everyone.
