During this time, weapons of mass destruction were created and the two major powers fought without any direct contact; battling each other through supporting different sides to wars that occurred in different countries. There was a lot of tension between them because of their beliefs and ideology, such as capitalism versus communism.

They achieved this by dropping two atomic bombs on Japan, specifically on Hiroshima; immediately killing 80, 000 people. Ten of thousands of people were killed in the aftermath, due to injuries and radiation and three days afterwards, another bomb was dropped on Nagasaki, killing around 40,000 people. There are historians who believe that this may have caused the end of World War II, but started the Cold War.

According to the Hierarchy of Needs, if they don't successfully have the basic needs, they can't reach the upper layers satisfactorily. Due to being unable to reach the basic needs, tensions would be high and they would be much more anxious and prone to paranoia.
