This was on a post by Donna Boucher from Math Coach's Corner. I love her blog! What can you tell about this student's understanding of math by looking at how he/she solved the problem?

This student also knows how to use the half and doubling strategy. Other qualities include neatness and legibility. This student also can explain his thinking and how he understands how these numbers form a relationship to one another. His "thinking" is easy to follow and to understand. It is easy to reference back to the problem so apply the thinking.

We can use the same concept but with easier operations and numbers for our younger students. The student work shown obviously demonstrates that they understand number and operation how they can be broken down and built up in differing relationships. This activity points to the key role that the "=" sign plays in math. Basically you can have a multitude of combinations and permutations of numbers on either side of the "=" sign, but they have to be equal!
