A bit of the story

The novel tells the adventures of Don Quixote, a nobleman from Spain who reads too many books about knights and goes mad. Believing himself to be a knight-errant, he sets out on his horse Rocinante to defend the weak and fight for justice. He is accompanied by his loyal squire, Sancho Panza, a simple farmer who brings a practical and realistic point of view to contrast Don Quixote’s fantasies.

One of the most famous scenes is when Don Quixote attacks windmills, thinking they are evil giants. Throughout the journey, Cervantes combines comedy, tragedy, and sharp social criticism. Don Quixote becomes a symbol of the conflict between dreams and reality, showing both the nobility and the foolishness of human ideals.

Don Quixote is considered the first modern novel in Western literature. Published in 1605 and 1615, it broke away from medieval chivalric tales and created a new style of storytelling that mixed humor, realism, and deep psychological exploration of characters. Cervantes’s work influenced countless writers, including Dickens, Dostoevsky, Flaubert, and even modern authors. Don Quixote himself became a universal symbol of idealism, representing the human struggle between dreams and reality.
