Start of the war (1775)

On April 19,the first shots were fired in Lexington, Massachusetts. On June 17, the British and the Americans engaged in their first major battle at Bunker Hill. Although the Americans ultimately retreated, they inflicted significant casualties on British soldiers, wounding and killing many in the process.

In 1776, several significant events took place. One of the most important was the official Declaration of Independence in July, which King George III rejected. Later, George Washington made a bold decision to cross the Delaware River from late 1776 to early 1777. This surprise attack on the British resulted in a major victory for the Americans.

French join the colonists (1778)

Unfortunately for the Americans, in 1780, Charleston fell to the British, resulting in the capture of many patriots. This event marked one of the biggest losses for the Americans in some time. The war finally came to an end in Yorktown in October 1781, when the British accepted defeat.
