Chp.1
Managing a classroom has evolved with the Daily 5 plan. With the Daily 5 skills are practiced until the “behaviors become habits and ‘default’ behaviors” (8). Before rewarding and going from yellow to red for the whole classroom was accepted. Now rewarding doesn’t have to be individually and working on behavior instead of calling the student out is a part of the daily 5. The daily 5 helps “students be engaged … for an extended amount of time” (11). This motivates the student and helps increase intellectually. This ultimately leads them to being able to work in groups as well as individually.
Routine is a huge part of building community in the classroom. The Daily 5 is an “essential structural routine in our classrooms” (12). Instead of worrying about managing all the time and wasting time learning, this helps your students get the opportunities to be taught about being independent while being accountable for their behaviors and reflecting to achieve their goals.
10 steps to independence + start building read to self-stamina
Start introducing Daily 5 choices and have short rounds each day once all are introduced.
Structure opens up with whole-group focus lesson (CAFÉ)
Students that have met their goals will knock off one of their daily five groups and as they progress they keep on getting rid of their groups. They have still have their Daily 5 but have a freedom depending on what works for them.
Chp.2
With the Daily 5, you are building trust & respect, community, choice, and accountability.
Trust & Respect/Community
Before Daily 5 trust was put into students and teachers let them do activities on their own without having the knowledge to do these activities affectively. Now, by teaching the 10 steps of independence and Daily 5 routines, teachers and students have trust and respect build up during this process. Community in the classroom is built off of trust and respect. Having a community “empowers students to hold others accountable for behaviors, learning, respect, and kindness” (24). I think that this is the key to having success in a classroom. In my opinion, having a community in the classroom can get you so far not only intellectually but socially. In middle school, one of my classes had a community built out of respect and trust with the teacher and students. I soared in this class and it made me love school again. Everyone was accountable of themselves and made sure that everyone was respectful of the classroom rules. I will never forget that class.
Choice/Accountability
Giving children the choice of what to read can increase their level of motivation due to having the freedom to choose. With the Daily 5 teachers give the students independent skills that they can use to not only have a choice in their learning but also be accountable of themselves. Students can use these skills in picking where to sit in the room to read or having control when silent reading takes place/someone else is talking/reading.
