I would take the chalk board away or spray it with

whiteboard spray! The desks are not set up for collaboration. I heard a great speaker who talked about

the need for CAVES (personal learning spaces) Campfires( community learning spaces) and watering holes (small learning spaces). He also talked about bringing in all kinds of sizes of tables and making unique spaces to learn.

Many schools are doing away with the teacher's desk in the room model and having a space in the school more like an office for it..and collaboration..I like that!

Bring in the Art class to muralize the walls...remove desks replace with movable multi-arrange tables...chairs with wheels...love creating "spaces" for groupwork

I do not like the desks, but I do not like students always sitting at tables facing each other either. The space needs color, computers, SMART board, students and more flexible seating. I have seen desks that have comfortable seats, swivels, and a larger work area where two or more can be pushed together for collaboration and projects yet pulled apart to for Socratic dialogue.

It occurs to me that a current events area is also key. If we want students to be project-driven creators; they need opportunities to know about issues, develop their passion, and join conversations.

This space needs LIFE. Texture, plants, fabric, bean bags, lighting, candles. What if you took the legs off all the desks or tables?? How would this change the way we sit and listen or talk to each other?
