Health- “Take a live snail and rub it’s slime against the burn and it will heal.”

In the medieval period, it was common to use snail slime as a mediacl ointment for burns and scalds on the skin. This practice is still carried through to this day.

Continuity-
Snail slime is still used in modern science (for healing minor injuries). Recent research has shown that snail slime contain antioxidants, antiseptic, anaesthetic, anti-irritant, anti-inflammatory, antibiotic and antiviral properties as well as collagen and elastin; properties that we now know are vital for skin repair. Snail slime has also been used in skin care products and has been made into a sort of ‘trend’ over the years.

Change-
When snail slime in used in today’s medical care, it is used mixed in with other properties whereas in the medieval period it was used straight from a snails live body. In the medieval period a snail was also only used for burns and scalds but today it is used in medical sciences as well as skin care products for the public. Wow.

Trepanning is a medical procedure which involves boring or scraping a hole into the skull to expose the dura mater, the outer membrane of the brain. It is believed to help cure epilepsy, mental disorders, migraines and other health problems by releasing pressure from the brain. A trephine, which is a utensil with a cylindrical blade, is usually used to perform this practice.
Continuity: This medical practice is still uncommonly used today, as in 2000, it was used to treat a woman suffering from chronic fatigue syndrome and depression.
Change: This method is now used with anaesthetic and in a controlled, safe, and hygienic environment.

In the medieval period, pipe systems were lined with lead (that was, of course, if they were lucky enough to have a pipe system) and the water was, by conventional standards, unpotable. Furthermore, the hierarchy and disparity between the classes ensured only the wealthy had access to bathrooms (privies) or other methods of waste disposal. Contemporary society has, however, advanced quite significantly. For example the existence of pipelines is essentially universal and not considered a privilege in developed countries and the quality of water has substantially increased. Some similarities between the modern world and the medieval period include: private companies owning water and the existnace of jobs involving the removal of waste (chiefly in developing counties?)

During the Middle Ages warfare, for various reasons, was. This led to a high demand for medical practice, especially in the battlefields. Malpractice was common due to the lack of education on medicinal and surgical procedures, the following quote being a prime example.

“They brought to me a knight with a sore on his leg; and a woman who was feeble-minded. To the knight I applied a small poultice; and the woman I put on diet to turn her humour wet.

Then a French doctor came and said, "This man knows nothing about treating them." He then said, "Bring me a sharp axe." Then the doctor laid the leg of the knight on a block of wood and told a man to cut off the leg with the axe, upon which the marrow flowed out and the patient died on the spot.

He then examined the woman and said, "There is a 🤬 in her head." He therefore took a razor, made a deep cross-shaped cut on her head, peeled away the skin until the bone of the skull was exposed, and rubbed it with salt. The woman also died instantly.

I asked them if I was needed any more, and when they said not I came home, having learned of their medicine what I knew not before.”

Usama ibn Munqidh, 'Autobiography' (c.1175) (Usama ibn Munqidh was a Muslim doctor)
