One problem/struggle that Turtle has is that she is separated from her mom. She had to move from New Jersey to Florida to live with family she has never met. This makes Turtle feel sad and homesick. She misses her mom. On page 53, it says "I miss Mama so much I hardly know what to do. We've never been apart. I worry about her being by herself."

I would describe turtle as smart and clever. In the story, one part that shows that Turtle is smart and clever is when she serves lunch to Nana Philly. Nana Philly keeps knocking the lunch off the table. So, Turtle makes herself lunch and eats it in front of Nana Philly until Nana Philly feels a little regretful for what she did. Turtle didn't cry when Nana Philly ruined the lunch, she was smart and figured out another way to get Nana Philly to eat.

Benny is silly. One example of this is when he was at school, he showed the principal his shoe and when Hallie asked what A was for, Benny said Baby. When she asked what C was for, he acted confused. But then they practiced outside of school he got them right and the in school he did not, and acted silly.

One part that was surprising was when Nana Philly kept knocking the food that Turtle made for her on the ground. But then, the following day, she completely changed her attitude and they started bonding. This makes me think that Nana Philly actually does like Turtle, she is probably just the type of person who does not trust someone right away.

Another part that surprised me was when Aunt Minnie took Turtle's dolls from her. Aunt Minnie demanded that Turtle give her the dolls, saying they belonged to her as a child and that Turtle's mom had stolen them. This is surprising because Aunt Minnie was acting like a child, like how she would have acted as a child fighting with her sister. This tells me that Aunt Minnie clearly is still holding a grudge from when she was a kid.
