I was a counselor at an elementary in Bardstown. I had just finished up a meeting with parents and as we walked back into the main office, everyone was gathered around a television. Minutes later, the second plane crashed into the World Trade Center. I felt confused, scared, and helpless because at that point we knew we were under attack.

There was also such a pervasive feeling of sadness and disbelief that morning that continued for weeks, as well as worry that my husband would surely re-enlist to once again serve this country.

I was living in Louisville and working for my dad. I was watching NBC as I was getting ready when I heard them say, "OMG. A plane has hit the World Trade Center." I immediately ran to the TV and listened as they speculated that is was an accident. As I watched, the second tower was hit. I remember feeling that America is under attack. I called my mom and we watched together as the Pentagon was hit. As I left for work, I remember listening to 84 radio and I heard the announcer say, "OMG. The tower is falling." The sound of his voice was something I'd never heard before. As I went through the day, people were scrambling to find a TV (smart phones weren't around!) or radio to get updates. The day was so quiet. No one was speaking.

I was in the first grade when 9/11 happened. I remember my teacher crying when the news was given about what happened. We weren't allowed to go to the playground for the rest of the year because of how close we were to Fort Knox. Everyone thought Fort Knox was going to be under attack because of the gold vault. I didn't really understand what was happening at age six, but looking back, I realize how strong America became after 9/11. NEVER FORGET!

I was a senior in college at the University of Kentucky. My husband and I were on our way to class and heard about the first plane hitting the Towers on the radio. At that time, everyone thought it was a small plane. We went to class. At the end of class, someone came in and apologized to the professor for not being there, shared about the second plane hitting and the plane hitting the Pentagon. We grew up outside of Washington, D.C. and both of our families still lived there. My dad worked in nearby Arlington and my father-in-law was supposed to be working in an office that had just been moved back to the Pentagon. He was out of town in Louisiana for a conference. I remember going to the theater in UK's student center and standing at the back watching the footage in between attempts to call home to make sure my family was safe - I didn't have a cell phone yet, so I used a pay phone - my parents had a long distance card that I used to call home - it took a long time to get through. My father-in-law lost co-workers that day, my sisters' friends lost parents that day, and the father of one of my best friends witnessed it, having just loaded onto a bus in the parking lot of the Pentagon. To this day, he doesn't really talk about it.

Our gym teacher, Ms. Boeglen rolled out a tv on a cart and turned it on and I think we kind of learned what was happening. The bell rang before we could start watching. When classes changed it was quiet and every room had a tv on. The teachers didn't care what room we went into then. I ended up in Mrs. Pennington's room, which is now Mrs. Owen's room I think. I was watching the tv when the second tower was hit. I was worried about my Dad having to go to war at this point. My Dad was a 1st Sergeant in the Army. I was just so stunned and shocked to see an attack like this in our country. There had never been anything like this. I knew this would change the world.

At the time I was Assistant Principal at Woodland Elementary. Our principal, Ann Caspar, along with all other principals were at Central Office for their monthly meeting with Mrs. Gray, Superintendent. I was meeting with a parent and someone stopped in my office to share that a plane had hit the first tower. At the time it was thought it could have been an accident. When the second plane hit, we realized it was an act of terrorism and/or war, and then the next attacks were reported. I then asked teachers to turn off their TVs feeling like we needed to protect our students as long as possible. We left one TV on in the Media Center but I did not want to watch. Mrs. Gray sent all principals back to their buildings. Mrs Caspar and I helped in the front office due to so many parents coming to pick up their children. That night I finally watched the news and felt incredibly sad and scared for our future. It also increased my respect and appreciation for first responders.
