(2)
He has to treat the german soldiers and does not want to help them, he took an
oath to heal and does not know if he should help them, hurt them or leave them.
3. At the very end of chapter two, Lisa has an important realization about how
much the war has changed things. What does she realize? Explain your
answer. (2)
She realized that “just having an idea mean someone could die” this is very
serious that the war has escalated to the point that for something so simple a life
could be lost.

4. Why does Lisa decide to follow Stefan and Jesper? What does she discover?
(2)
Because she heard a big argument between Stefan and Jesper about Stefan
being able to be in the resistance, she discovers that they are dropping leaflets.
5. What “game” do Stefan and Lisa play with the Nazi soldiers? (1)
They play chicken.
6. Name three things the Resistance has done to fight back against the Nazis.
(3)
The resistance has destroyed nazi factories, dropped leaflets and brodcasting
real news about the war.

7. How does the Resistance “tell” the Danes the real news of the war? (2)
They drop leaflets on the floor of a streetcar including real news about WWII.

8. (4)

I think that Lisa means that the Germans are getting them angry enough to kill and do the same horrible things to the Germans that the Germans are doing to them. Killing others is not right, even though they may have killed someone else (like in the resistance’s case) it is not right to kill them. I think that if someone killed, the just thing to do would be to give them a long jail sentence (although the resistance can’t put the Germans in jail), though not for life. I would be concerned for myself if I was killing anyone, no matter what they did or who they are, because taking a life would rest on my shoulders for the rest of eternity.

Quote Analysis

Quotation Explanation

Below you will find quotations from the novel Lisa’s War. For each quotation, you need to
explain what the context is and why it is significant to the story. (20)
A) “I remember I was dreaming about a bee. A giant bumblebee. It was buzzing in my
ear; it was going to sting me. I opened my eyes and sat up with a start, but the
buzzing didn’t stop.” (p. 1)

I think that this quote is a startling start to the book as after she woke up she heard the buzzing
of the nazi planes and was confused as they worked thier way into her dream as a giant bee so
when she woke up she could still hear them. This shows the sudden invasion at the start of the
book and how drastic of a change the invasion was.

B) “I leap off, dragging my bag, run into the grass and trees beside the stop, and finish
throwing up. Then I sink down by my sack. I’m weak, I’m shaking. I think I’m
crying, and my mouth tastes terrible. I want to go home. How did I get myself into
this? I think back to the streetcar. All those people – they saved me. Maybe they
saved my life.” (p. 29)

This quote is significant to the story as this is the point that Lisa realises the amount of danger
working for the resistance is and how all of these little things could get her imprisoned or
killed. This portrays her having regrets about joining the resistance and considering how
dangerous this really was.

C) “She whispers to me, ‘That was for Mama and Papa. But it was only the first.’ She’s
actually enjoying herself.
A chill runs down my spine. My God, I think, these Germans are dragging us all
down to their level. How will we keep ourselves better than them?” (p.46)

This quote shows how terrifying and nasty the Nazi’s were, and how carefull we have to be
because we could become the same thing. If Susanne was enjoying killing people that shows
the amount of pain and suffering the Nazi’s inflicted opon her and how unhuman they are.

D) “ ‘No, Father, it can’t be!’ I cry. I’m not willing to accept what he’s getting at. What
does it matter that we are Jewish? I don’t feel any different than anyone else, and I’m
not treated differently. Now will I have to be only a Jew? Is being a Jew all that’s
important about me? The very name Eichmann makes me feel sick to my stomach.”
(p. 57)

This Quote is significant because it shows how even a small part of their life could make a big
difference and how even though they are barely different from everyone else they become
endangered. This also explains how one part of you does not define all of you, with the
example of a hockey player they could be great at sports but also math. One part of a person is
not the whole of the person.
