Decided the song to play

Among the provided 20 songs, I was considering to pick a one song between 'Dragon flies' and 'Singing in the rain'. In this case, I've also looked 'Shindler's List John Williams'. I asked my music teacher to recommend the song I'll play in my story telling assessment, and she strongly suggested me to play 'Singing in the rain'. To contrast between 'Dragon flies' and 'Singing in the rain', in my opinion, 'Singing in the rain is much more challengeable for me to play. This is because 'Singing in the rain' has the bright atmosphere - its romantic song - that the piece's tempo wanders with using dynamics even larger, mezzo-forte, and piano etc.. Thus, the piece I'm going to play called 'Singing in the rain' which is G major. I'm going to work on this piece by playing the piano.

It’s the first day to start work on the song. As I mentioned before, I’ve chosen ‘Singing in the rain’ which was the OST from the movie called “Singing in the rain”. It is well-known song with the step dance. Anyway, before my music teacher printed out the piece and started, I searched on the internet and watched the scene when Gene Kelly said goodbye to his girl friend and dance in the rain. The reason is that It will be better to listen the song a lot to get used to it and easily adapt to play the piano later. So, after I watched the video about 3-5 times, I started to play the piece. However, the left hand goes back and forth a lot which was hard for me to get used to it. Therefore, I decided to play with only right hand first and left hand later. In this case, it is good to play the right hand first because right hand plays the melody of the song. Thus, before I film the next video, my goal is to play with two hands at the same time even it is not good enough.

It’s the second week I’ve started to work on the piece. As my goal from the first day of the piece, I achieved the goal that I play with two hands at the same time. It was quite hard to play the piece in two hands with numbers of back and forth moves. In this video, I played most of the first page of my piece. There was not enough time to work on the piece for a week because of other classes’ tests that I had only 2 music classes and 2-3 hours to play the song. I tended to play the song faster than the actual one because I kept thinking to express the emotion: joyful, that the rhythm kept go up. This made me to make lots of mistakes. Thus, for the next video, I give my word to practice the piece slowly and get high possibility of don’t making the mistakes.

Third week has come. I improved a lot than before. Of course I’m yet to memories the song but I can play the whole piece with looking at the sheet. Moreover, I started to down the pedal to emphasis the melody and make the piece smooth. However, when I was practicing, my music teach came into my practice room and gave me some feedbacks. She said ‘Singing in the rain’ has light mood - which allows me to imagine the white feather. And she said try to play the rhythm - I mean enjoy the song. Thus, for the next video, I decided not to down the pedal - because it disturb the mood of the song: light and joy, that I can play the melodies with staccatos. Moreover, I’ll listen the music and not only listening the music, but also watching the Gene Kelly’s dance which I can easily imagine and play the song with thinking it.

Last day of working on the piece

This is the last week to write the process journal. Now, I memorized the whole piece and I was thinking how to express this joyful emotions through playing the piano, and I realized to use articulations and dynamics. These are really important and helpful part to expressing the emotion strongly and effectively. So, I played the piano light->hard this few times, which adds the loud and low dynamics. Moreover, for the articulations, I put some staccatos which didn’t have from the original piece. It is good to emphasis the lightness and creates bright atmosphere. Thus, today - the day before the final performance -’s lunch time, I went to see my music teacher and she gave me some feedbacks. She said it’s good to add articulations and dynamics. However, I didn’t seem I enjoy the song. I need to play with my heart - soul. So I decided to play the song with my joyful feeling by moving my upper body little bit and make bright facial expression to express the emotion for my final performance. This is because there ll be lots of audience are sitting on the chair and watch my performance and they can see / feel emotions thought no only the playing the music, but also with my body movement - how close to my body and piano (if it is far way, people will think my soul is not playing with the piece), and facial expression (smiles).
