Inclusivity is very important to me, I believe that no person should be excluded from anything for any reason but especially not race. It has hurt me to learn about all the times in history that students have been doomed to fail just because of their skin color, I want to work to make sure that never happens again. I want all students to be involved with school and that they all get a chance to do their very best in whatever it is that they are doing.

In my classroom I want everyone to be proud of their heritage, and I want everyone to embrace their culture and not feel ashamed of it and try to hide it. I want all of my students to know that whatever background they come from, whatever language they speak, or whatever color skin they have that they are accepted there. If a student wants to speak their language or learn in their language they should be able to. I think it is wrong to take away from a person’s culture or heritage just because it’s more convenient for you. If a student wants to learn in their own language then they have every right to, and it’s a teachers job to embrace that and help them in any way they can. I want my classroom to be welcoming to all and a place that everyone of any background can come and learn in whatever way helps them succeed the most.

Historicizing

In my class I want to teach the truth of history, not whatever is just most convenient. I think it is so important for kids to know what actually happened in history, so much of the history taught in schools is fabricated to tell a different story than what actually happened. There’s also a lot of history that is never taught, things that the school doesn’t want to talk to kids about, such as the lemon grove case. The lemon grove case dealt with schools literally segregating Hispanic students from the rest in a completely different building and I had never heard about that in school before. In my personal belief I think that’s wrong to hide history from students, because when history is not taught and reflected upon, it is doomed to repeat itself.

What I want my classroom to be is one where everyone feels safe and can be successful. I want my classroom to be somewhere that students can feel like they can be themselves, no matter who they are. My classroom will embrace bilingualism and multilingualism, and any student that feels more comfortable using another language can do so. If a student needs to be accommodated by receiving materials or work in a different language then it is my duty as their teacher to make it happen. If a student is having personal troubles and feel like they can’t turn to anyone I want them to know that my classroom is a safe space. It is a teachers responsibility to make sure that students learn, and if a student doesn’t learn well in English it’s up to teachers to make sure students can learn in whatever language they know best. That’s the kind of classroom I want, one that no matter what language anyone speaks, or what color skin they have, or whatever they are going through outside of school, that they feel that my class is on their side and that I am going to do whatever it takes to help them succeed.

The involvement of the educational community is very important, for the students and the teachers. To have parents, administrators, teachers, students, and anyone else in the community involved with school activities and participation would go a long way for the students and show them that people care about them and their education. That can go a long way for a student who is struggling or wants to feel like they have support around them. In my future classroom I’m going to make sure that I try to get as much support from the community as I can to make the students know that there are people around them that care.

Emergent bilingual students have always had a very hard time in schools. Most schools haven’t supported bilingual speaking and have made it so emergent bilingual speakers don’t speak any other language other than English. In my classroom this will never happen, one of the biggest goals as a teacher is to make sure your students succeed and stopping them from learning in their language or what they learn best in is directly ignoring that goal. In my classroom I will make sure that emergent bilingual students can speak whatever languages they want to speak and will be clear to them that they have my support, and that I will do whatever they need me to do in order for them to succeed.
