In the late 90's I made a 17 minute documentary called Hand of Learning which illustrated arts integration with science and social studies at the 4th grade level in an inner city philadelphia school. This documentary led to the creation of a Small learning community. Another team - put an idea on the table "I want to do a newspaper unit". Then all the content built off from that project. Everything was pulled together. This was much more meaningful for kids. Used scientific method as they talked about books. Very successful when she got to hire the teammate. Attended Middle Level Institute, Service-Learning at a place based (ocean) site with kids overnight (bonding)
Went our own way (was negative).  Need to be careful to exclude other teams.

Another experience:
Picked projects and taught the curriculum around those projects - insulating a house in town.  Did a lot of work around what the kids are curious about in their life.  After a cancer diagnosis, kids did project around that.  It was a lot of work that requires you to get together with your teammate.  It changes every year so it's hard to have a plan for the next year because it depends on where the students go with it.

Another experience:
UAs have shared planning time, but only mixing 2 standard sets.  Integrated art and technology - really fun and the kids get so much more out of it.
Illumination collaboration - made paper and made lanterns and integrated soft circuitry and LED lights.
