Try It Out: Student Reading Prescription by Jennifer Myers

After taking the running record of the student reading On Vacation, if you were the student's teacher, what would you plan to teach this student next? Answer these questions: 1. What are her strengths and weaknesses? 2. What level of book would you use for instruction? (Remember, this was a book level I) 3. What skills should she learn to succeed?

1. The student, when comfortable, reads fluently. The one weakness I noticed is the student does not read contractions as contractions, but the full two words. The student struggled with the word Grammy as well.
2. I would use level 2 for this student. While they did have a few mistakes, for the most part they were able to self correct the mistakes and continue through the story.
3. Focusing on context clues would help this child to succeed while reading.

1. The student reads very well! A strength that the student has is fluency and comprehension. She seems to understand what the story is talking about and uses that within the next steps of reading. I think a weakness that is noticeable are the contractions throughout the story. She understands contractions, however, she does not read them in context fluently.

2. I would use level 2 for her. Although there were minimal mistakes, she still succeeded throughout the story.

3. I think slowing down and taking her time would help the student tremendously when reading.

The students strengths is her ability to recognize when a mistake is made. I would continue to have her master fluency and the weird sounds, since she struggled on the 'PH'' and "cial". I would use book level 2 for instruction to continue to give her a challenge since her accuracy rate was so high. I think she should learn more phonetic skills to succeed more than she already has.
