Initially it was with children’s paints, on the back of wallpaper but after a few months it was suggested that we should take our art more seriously. After buying some canvases and acrylic paint, we have not looked back and now 14 of us paint and we have had over 70 group and solo exhibitions, nationally and internationally. Each artist has their own distinctive style, colours and themes, ranging from solitary deserts style, figurative, abstract and paintings with traumatic content. Each style has become easy to identify, which helps me to track life when I am not in control of the body. Many alters are unaware that they share a body with other artists.

With limited resources, Sampson asked his friends to be his models and researched some of the most common mental disorders around the world. His work brought him down to 12 smaller topics, ranging from depression to schizophrenia to insomnia. In eight weeks, Sampson designed and photographed each shot, making sure his version of each disorder was accurate.

The event was produced and run by ResearchNet, a service user and carer research group interested in all aspects of mental health. It was designed as part of a research project to look at public attitudes toward mental health issues. The evening introduced Kim’s fascinating story and showcased her art. People had the opportunity to purchase a signed copy of Kim’s autobiography – All Of Me.
