According to research published in 2016, roughly half of all inventions are created by accident. Though the process of developing the following three famous products still required dedication and hard work, each of the following was invented in a moment of serendipity:

1. The Slinky. This springy children’s toy was discovered by Richard James, a naval engineer who was tasked with developing springs sensitive enough to keep fragile equipment in place on navy ships as they tossed with the sea. When one of these springs was knocked from a shelf, it walked across the floor in the way that would make it famous, and the Slinky was born.

2. Post-It Notes. As a researcher in 3M’s laboratories, Richard Spencer aimed to create a strong adhesive. Instead, he developed the opposite, inventing a weak adhesive that could be easily stuck to objects and pulled off easily leaving no marks behind.

3. Play-Doh. This malleable children’s toy was originally designed by Noah and Joseph McVicker with the goal of removing soot from the surface of wallpaper. As fewer people began to burn fires as a primary heating source in the home, the invention was forgotten, until the men discovered that their sister-in-law had found good use for it: entertaining the children in her classroom.
