  • The next morning at breakfast, Jonas manages to avoid directly lying while not telling his dream to his parents.
  • The dream involved his sledding down the hill, again and again, always about to reach something at the bottom, except he doesn't know what the something is. He knows that it is something good, however—something "welcoming."
  • Jonas heads to school, and during lunch everyone is buzzing about their new assignments and their training. Jonas realizes he couldn't explain his training even if he were allowed, since no one knows what a sled or hill or snow is anyway.
  • When he sees Fiona, it's clear that she expects him to talk about his training. When he doesn't, she's a little taken aback, but she can't ask directly because that would be rude.
  • So she just talks about her training to work with the elderly. She reveals that they use a discipline wand on the Old the same way they do on the young.
  • Then, as he's looking at Fiona, she "changes" the same way the apple did that day. It only happens for an instant, and it is just her hair that changes.
  • When he arrives at The Giver's place after school, Jonas decides to ask him about it.
  • The Giver wants to know if Jonas looked down at the sled when he was experiencing the memory. Jones says no, he didn't.
  • Indeed, says The Giver, this is a case of his seeing beyond; the same thing happened to him when he was Jonas's age, but it happened a little bit differently.
  • Before he explains, however, he makes Jonas lie down and tells him to recall the memory of the snow from yesterday.
  • Jonas concentrates and suddenly is back on the sled. He looks down. Whatever quality that the apple had and that Fiona's hair had for a brief moment, this sled has permanently. He doesn't know what it is, though.
  • Jonas comes back from his memory and The Giver has him look up at one of the books on the shelf, which immediately "changes" the way the apple did.
  • The Giver then confirms his diagnosis: "You're beginning to see the color red," he tells Jonas.
  • Not only does Jonas not know what "color" means, he also doesn't know what "red" means. The Giver explains that, back in the day, before "Sameness," objects had a shape and size, but they also had a color. That's what Jonas saw in the apple, in Fiona's hair, and even in the faces of the crowd at the Ceremony, since flesh has red tones in it.
  • The Giver says that the genetic scientists couldn't work all the kinks out, which is why people like Jonas sometimes still see it.
  • Jonas thinks the color is beautiful, and The Giver explains that he will soon be able to see all the colors.
  • Naturally, Jonas wants to know why anyone would ever get rid of something so wonderful. The Giver explains that it was a choice, and that for losing things like color, they gained control.
  • Jonas vehemently exclaims that they shouldn't have made such a choice, and The Giver is all, "Patience."
  • Jonas asks what The Giver meant when he said he, too, "saw beyond" when he was a kid, but in a different way. The Giver says he'll save that lesson for another day, and begins to send to Jonas the memory of a rainbow.

  • After that, Jonas doesn't want to go back to the Annex. He just wants a normal life like all of his friends.
  • The Giver, trying to make up for the whole warfare thing, transmits some really good memories to Jonas: a birthday party, for instance, which shows Jonas how nice it is to be singled out as an individual, instead of always the same as everyone else.
  • When he gets to experience riding a horse, Jonas sees how wonderful the bond between man and animal can be. When he sits beside a campfire in the dark, he knows at last the joy of solitude.
  • Jonas asks The Giver what his favorite memory is, adding that he doesn't have to give it away yet.
  • The old man, however, is happy to give away the memory. He transmits to Jonas the scene of Christmas morning.
  • Afterwards, he asks Jonas what he saw. Jonas talks about family, and has to ask the word for "grandparents," which he didn't know.
  • For the first time, Jonas comprehends that his parents have parents. He thinks about the way it works in his community, the system in place for dealing with the elderly, which he still thinks works pretty well.
  • Still, there was a strong emotion in the Christmas scene that he felt but could not name. He struggles for a bit, and finally The Giver tells him that it was love.
  • Jonas, embarrassed, expresses a wish for love in his own life. He wishes The Giver could be his grandfather. He wishes he could experience what he felt in the memory.
  • Although, he concedes, he recognizes that that is a very "dangerous" way to live.
  • When The Giver asks him to explain, however, all Jonas can come up with is a comment on the fire that was burning in the room, and the way that flames are dangerous. Although he did like the warmth…
  • Later, back at home, Jonas hesitantly asks his parents if they love him.
  • They're a bit flustered, and chuckling, they reprimand him to pay attention to "precision of language."
  • Jonas is confused.
  • His Father explains that such a word has become obsolete, meaningless even.
  • This confuses him further, since the emotion he felt of love was far from meaningless.
  • When they ask him if he understands what they mean, he says yes—which is his first lie to his parents.

  • then fiona asked jonas to go on a bike ride with jonas and jonas wanted nothing more than that 
  • jonas missed being a kid and he just wanted to be a kid again
  • he felt loss from his childhood and he felt as if he was losing his friends
  • he was ad that all of this was gone because of his assignment
  •  he knew that they couldn't love him as much as they could he could but they couldn't get it because they didnt have the memories
  • at dinner they talked about how much fun lilly had with her friends and how she tried her fathers bike
  • then they talked about how gabe started walking and how he gay around the house because that is how he said his own name

  • he wanted to start teaching lilly hwo to ride a bike 
  • because her ceremony of nine was almost here
  • it was hard for jonas to believe that almost one year ago he started his training  
  • jonas's father said that he wanted to go to bed early and because the twins would be born tomorrow and he said that the twins were identical

  • they weight them, then then lighter one leaves he gets all clean the he gets a tiny release ceremony
  • lilly said "what if somebody from elsewhere took the other child then he would be named jonathan then when they were six they went to another community then there would be two jonathans that look the same then the wrong jonathan would be taken home

  • The next afternoon jonas talked about release to the giver and asked his opinion on it
  • then the giver asked his own release or others
  • then jonas almost apologized but he didn't
  • the giver takes about how when he is in pain that he thinks about his own release when he is in a lot of pain and it is hard for him to bear it
  • he wishes he could put in a request to be released but because of the rules he isn't allowed
  • even though receiver is a great honor jonas was not excited to be fully trained because of all the bad memories
  • then jonas asked the giver to tell him what happened to the old reciver
  • then he said that it was really simple on the surface, a receiver was chosen then it was never seen again
  • he said that the old reciver that was chosen was a smart young girl and she was eager to learn about being reciver and very bright

  • he said that when he was explaining everything to her and how it worked her eyes were lumminous
  • the giver said that he felt the same feeling for rosemary as the memory of the grandparents

  • he talked about how everything  was going well with her training 
  • and he remembered her laugh
  • for five weeks he was just giving her happy memories and he tried to give her memories that would make her laugh because he loved her laugh
  • the giver gave her a memory of loneliness and loss she was stunned at the end it gave pain the the giver to give her pain and he didnt want to but rosemary kept asking
  • she knew it was her job and she knew that she had to do it
  • the giver tried to give her happy memories at the end of the day like he did with jonas but when she left she was always frowning and sad
  • at the end of one day she kissed his cheek
  • after that he was told that he went to the chief elder
  • she asked for release
  • jonas said that it was against the rules to do that
  • but then the giver said it was against his rules not hers
  • before that wasn't one of the rues
  • when she asked for released they had to say yes and the giver never saw her again after the afternoon she kissed him
  • then jonas thought what if he was released or what if he fell into the river like the little four caleb

  • he said he sounded like lilly
  • the giver said that when someone gets released thie rmemories get put back into the community
  • but if they lost jonas then it would be a lot harder because all the memories of warfare and colour would be giver

  • Jonas was crying on the bed and he did not want to go home after
  • the receiver said that he had to stop crying because his family unit couldn't hear him cry
  • then jonas was upset because no one heard the twin cry but his father
  • the giver told the lady that jonas was gonna spend the night with him

  • the plan was to brng some extra clothes
  • leave his bike in the middle of nowhere and run out into the dark to the annex room and the giver said that there is no night guard person so there will be no trouble 
  • jonas was gonna leave a note on his bed that would say that he went on an early morning bike ride and that he would meet them at the ceremenoy
  • then he thought becuase he is a twelve in training he didnt have to sit qith his age group anymore so asher would think that he would be sitting with his parents and his parents would think he is sitting with asher or the giver
  • it would take them time to realize that he wasn't even there
  • then the giver will get a car and a driver to get jonas elsewhere and he would give him food that he would save from meals from that week
  • then by noon everyone would realise that he was gone but they couldn't interrupt the ceremony so hey had to wait

  • then they would start the weird name ceremony thing
  • jonas asked one last time if he could come but the giver said that his role was to help the people and the role that jonas had was to leave and give them wisdom

  • In the beginning jonas kept telling himself that it was going to work over and over
  • everything that they planned fell apart
  • it was really dangerous because some of the workers were still out

  • there were airplanes looking for them
  • dividing the food was getting harder and harder and jonas's legs were getting really sore
  • jonas was not scared that the planes would see them because they couldn't see colour therefore they couldn't see gabe's golden locks
  • since they had been running for awhile now everytime gabe heard an engine he said "plane plane"

  • In the new place they were in jonas starting seeing changes in the road
  • it was more bumpy and narrow
  • one night jonas hit a rock in the path and he fell and gabe was uninjured but he was scared
  • jonas twisted his ankle and he scraped his knee 
  • now instead of being scared of the people searching for im he was scared of the new paths and what was to come
  • then jonas saw his first stream of water they he heard gabe say plane plane so he went into the trees and grabbed gabe

  • when jonas was eating he was imagining full meals like big steaks and birthday cakes

  • he thought that if he would have stayed he wouldn't be starving
  • but if he stayed then gabe would be dead
  • now jonas is really struggling to bike
  • and he has to deal with different weather

  • jonas was having trouble getting up a hill and he was trying to remember warmth
  • then he gave the memory to gabe and he got the strength to keep going
  • Jonas wished that the giver had given him more memories of warmth before he "escaped"
  • once he reached the summit of the hill he got more numb and more tired
  • he started thinking about happiness and all the good memories he had with his friends and family
  • jonas knew that through the big storm there was warmth in the light that he saw
  • jonas saw a sled and sat on it but he was having trouble holding the rope because his fingers were so cold
  • he held gabe tight as they went down in the snow
  • he was starting to lose consciousness 
  • he was going down faster and faster and they he felt joy
  • when he got to the bottom he heard people singing

    In the community everyone is hidden from what pain is except for one or two people. The giver and the receiver without them the community would have to feel the pain of "elsewhere" and from the past. Jonas often talked about how before he was a receiver he never felt real pain. Like on page 62 the chief elder talks about when he will be receiver he will have a lot of pain. "''Jonas,'' she said, turning to him, but speaking in a voice
    that the entire community could hear, "the training required
    of you involves pain. Physical pain.""  Another example is when the chief elder talked about Asher at the ceremony of 12. She talked about how he had trouble with his language precision and how they smacked him until he got it right. Page 55 "He couldn't seem to stop, though for each
    lapse the discipline wand came again, escalating to a series
    of painful lashes that left marks on Asher's legs. Eventually,
    for a period of time, Asher stopped talking altogether, when
    he was a Three.". So Asher couldn't have perfect language if he did not get hit.


    In the community there are a lot of rules and laws to keep peace and order. If you break some of the more sever laws then you will be released from the community which means to be injected by a lethal injection. If no one in the community got released then no there would be no order and laws would always be broken. If there was no pain (being released) then there would be no pleasure (a "perfect" community). That is why in my opinion pleasure and pain is the most important theme.
