After testing the urine samples from the patients, we were able to determine that they were not experiencing symptoms from that of tobbacco poisoing. The patients did not have continue continue in their urine which lead us to this conclusion. After the urine sample we tested the patients’ blood for a neurotoxin that would show if they had botulism. After the test, it was determined that their was not presence of the neurotoxin, so the patients did not have botulism.

After doing a chromatography test on the Mason’s tomatoes, they was determined to be positive for Jimson weed poisoning based on the presence of the yellow strip of color on the chromatography paper.

The Mason’s and the Smart’s were try a new way to grow tomatoes that they had learned from the neighboring farm. The neighbor had wanted a hearty, frost-resistant tomato that would ripen later into the fall, so he used the Jimson weed to graft into the tomatoes plant. The difference between the two farms’ tomatoes was that the neighbors had used a very small Jimson weed to graft into, whereas the Masons and the Smarts used a full grown Jimson weed plant that yield too much toxicity when picked. Because of this, the families were poisoned from their own tomatoes. The Mason’s tomatoes yeilded about twice as much alkaloid per hundred grams as the neighbors’ had. The treatment for the two families would consist of breathing support, IV fluids, laxatives, and other medicines to treat their symptoms.
