Gotye - Somebody That I Used To Know

The song represents the man and woman being in a severely dysfunctional relationship. The song begins with Gotye's point of view. He goes on to tell us he is not happy but remains in the relationship. The reason for this is because he is almost obsessed with being sad. The chorus communicates that he was later dumped by the woman and she proceeded to remove herself from his life. We get a better understanding of this by him telling us she went and had her friends collect her belongings from his apartment, then changed her number. She proposed they could remain friends but he is saddened by how she now treats him like a stranger. Kimbra goes on to explain the relationship from her point of view. In essence, he was verbally abusive and he claimed she was the main source of the issues that occurred in the relationship. In extension, she says he was "hung up" on somebody else. She becomes worn out from the relationship and ends it. The song does a good job producing a melancholy vibe. In the end, it's up to interpretation if the song is positive or negative. Who is the antagonist? Either one from different points of view is the others "bad guy". He claims she is the cause of the issues within the relationship, and then she claims he was abusive. Do we really know? In my opinion, the creativity of the music video was spot on in terms of symbolism, how the paint is a reference to memories. Other than that I never really enjoyed the song.

Bob Marley – Buffalo Soldier

I do apologize if my interpretation of the song is wrong. The song is about a Buffalo Soldier, a name given to African American cavalry troops. It begins with Bob recognizing an African American soldier's hair and stench. Seeing the man struggling to fit in with what I presume is society, he connects it to the previous, and concludes it is a buffalo soldier. He was brought to America from Africa to aid in the War. The man is represented as lower class and struggling, evidence for this is the mans appearance and odor. The song has a slow but up beat rhythm to create a positive vibe to show Bob's appreciation for these types of Soldiers. My opinion of the song is: the meaning of the song itself is deep and well received. The actual song was difficult to sit through. Reggae is not my type of music.

The way you can compare the two songs is by looking at the relationships each one is about. Buffalo Soldier can be about many. It can be about the relationship of the Soldier and America, Soldier and War, Soldier and Society. Where Somebody That I Used to Know is about a dysfunctional relationship. This can be said for both songs, as each one involves a struggle between two forces, making the relationship difficult.
