In order to prepare for my master's degree, I did a lot of informational interviews with students and professionals currently in the field. I spoke with students enrolled in the international education program at the University of Manchester and my undergraduate university. I also talked to current professors in Manchester and other universities. This gave me a good idea about what the field of international education entailed and potential career paths post-graduation.

It must be the habit of learning English everyday. Oral English and English listening is quite important for the study of Master's degree, so I managed to listen to BBC World Service and materials related to education almost everyday. As for the practice of speaking, I tried to talk to myself in English regularly and retell learning materials by using authentic expressions. I hope my preparation could help me to adapt to the study in this university as soon as possible.

In fact, I graduated in 2020, but I only started my master's study this year. (not only because of the epidemic, GA) more importantly, I felt that I was not clear about the direction of future learning, and even felt very confused for a time. In the gap year, I often consulted my undergraduate teacher. He told me to be a teacher. It happened that I was also an English major, so I went to an educational institution to teach children basic grammar and found it very interesting. I have a strong interest in the field of education. Therefore, I believe that the most important thing in learning a discipline is that people should have a certain understanding of the discipline and practice it.

To be honest, although my undergraduate major is more like a combination of Business English and General English, I am still not very good at it. Also, my undergraduate major was absolutely nothing relevant with education. By the way, I consider myself not an extroverted person. So, I think the important things I have done was realizing the shortage and what to learn in Manchester and making up my mind to come here to study TESOL with the dream of becoming an English teacher. This is also a big challenge for me. Besides, I started off with a very low IELTS score and it took me a long time achieving the score required by the University of Manchester. I know that my ability to read literature and write academically may not be up to the level required for this major, but I did try to read a little bit of academic texts in English before coming here and attempt to collet lots of essays and resources that might be need in my courses. I am very hopeful that through this year’ s study can I gradually make up the theories and skills related to education that I did not learn previously as much as possible.

After deciding to study a major related to education, I intentionally spent some time in different schools, such as primary and secondary schools. The reason for doing this is that I believe that education is a creative work without creating any work. It exists anywhere, any time. And the school is the place where this work is most concentrated. It is pointless to talk about education apart from practice. Therefore, after I studied for my own Chinese teaching qualification and got my high school teacher's certificate, I often spent time with the children who were really studying. I did not formally teach them.but by observing the learning habits of different students and their attitudes towards different styles of teachers and how well they digested the knowledge they imparted, i learned something new.

In addition, when writing my undergraduate thesis, I chose to work on the topic of second language acquisition and the development and study of the distance learning tools available. During the preparation phase of my dissertation, I gained a different perspective on my work in education, particularly on second language teaching.

Everything I did before coming to Manchester University was relatively short and easy knowledge and I am really looking forward to acquiring more useful knowledge in the coming year.

My master's degree is somewhat related to my undergraduate major, but I still did some preparation before I began my master's degree.

The first and most important thing was the language. I took a pre-sessional course and registered for workshops. I thought it was essential to improve my English skills, especially for non-native English speakers, and I had to get used to using English.

Secondly, I think it is also important to read academic papers. Compared to an undergraduate degree, a master's degree requires a higher level of academic discipline, so reading more articles will develop my academic habits.

Finally, it is also important for me to keep a good mindset. This is my first time studying abroad and I need to adapt to a different culture, language, and lifestyle, which is a challenge and a new opportunity.

First, to study abroad, language is fundamental and important, because in addition to daily communication, we also need to read a lot of literature and literature writing. So it is very important for me as a student to develop the habit of listening to English and reading every day. In addition, it is also a challenge to adapt to a learning life that is different from my undergraduate teaching mode, so mespend lots of time develop the ability to learn to use the unfamiliar student system and find the required information through various channels. Finally, I need to adjust my mood and attitude. Studying in a foreign country can be very hard and lonely, and it requires great determination and effort.

I am now in a romantic relationship, and he is not in my city. We used to stay connected well but because of the jet lag, we sometimes cannot finalize a conversation. I miss him.
In a word, me and my boyfriend are both in a period when we have our academic tasks to fulfill, maybe it's time to sacrifice something for good.

To be honest, it is a big dicision for me,which needs a lot of courage, and I am fortunate enough to get the support from my family and friends.

So the most important thing for me is to change the role from an employee to a student, especially studying in an unfamiliar country. I made a lot of effort to improve my English ability, and the pre-sessional course did benefit me.Through the course, I developed my academic language skills and academic study skills to some extent. The most helpful part for me is the academic writing lessons which give me a clear clue of academic writing style and structure, although there are still some techniques and academic words I need to learn and develop in the future.

I am glad that the teachers and students are very kind and welcoming, and I am looking forward to starting my academic year in UoM.

The most important preparation for my study in Manchester is my efforts to know about the university, I communicated with previous postgraduates and had the information about how to apply and which course units our curricula include. And through familiarizing the requirements from lectures, i realized the importance of writing an academic essay, so I also did some preparation of learning how to make writing concise and correct, and I also believe next semester will be a great help for me since we have a great deal of academic writing training.

Adjusting my attitude towards difficulties is the most vital thing I have done to prepare my Master's degree.

What everybody knows is that getting a Master's degree is definitely much more challenging than what we've experienced during undergraduate period. What we don't know exactly is how many and how tough of the obstacles we will be facing. I am not able to anticipate and list down every difficulty I might encounter in the future and develop solutions to them in advance, but I can adjust my attitude towards them. I believe that positive attitude is the key to solve various problems.

I read some books to get instruction on how to hold the proper attitude towards difficulties and tried to put it into practice in everyday life. I went through many self-talks where I got to tune in my exact feelings and found some ways picking myself up whenever meeting troubles, large or small, during this particularly long summer holiday. It turns out that I feel less apprehensive of inevitable difficulties in the future now.

The biggest preparation for my master’s degree in Manchester, I think, is my determination to pursue further studies overseas. Actually, my parents are not ready to send me out of the city, let alone out of the country even though I’m already 20. And they don’t think it’s right time for me to study abroad given the COVID-19. So I spared much effort to persuade them that I could take good care of myself and told them I was determined to do this and I would not change my mind. At last, we both compromised. I would take online courses in the first semester.

Of course, the preparation to study abroad for a master’s degree means much more than this. I’m going to a totally different country which means different time zones so I will adjust myself to the time lag as now I’m going to have classes mostly in the evenings. And I should get used to checking emails instead of my WeChat so that I could keep tract of those meetings, activities and assignments. Besides, I try to get some English speaking practices to avoid the embarrassment of not knowing what to say in conversations. In my eyes, master’s studies are more about active learning so I should take more initiative in learning new things. Anyway, I’m looking forward to studying in Manchester and experiencing something different there.

I am really looking forward to go to Manchester to see my beautiful university. However, thanks to the COVID_19, I have to stay in China until next semester, I feel upset and pity!
When talking about the most important thing I have done to prepare for the start of my study in Manchester, the word “ challenge ” comes to my mind. As choosing to start a totally different life in a country that I have never been to can be a huge challenge for me, I think the most crucial thing I have done must be to make up my mind to take the challenge on my own.Taking the challenge is not only the most important thing I have done but also the bravest thing in my life. Here are some reasons why I say so. First of all, I am a nostalgic person, thus studying in a country far away from home will cause Severe homesickness. Secondly, coronavirus is spreading all over the world which poses additional concerns. Thirdly, I need to study with a language that is not my mother language, and this will increase the difficulty of my study. And in order to make up my mind to take the challenge, not only did I try to take care of myself, but also I took some classes to improve my English skills. For example, I learned to cook, and I signed up for foreign social media accounts. And now I am really looking forward to my study at the University of Manchester.

Before I came to Manchester, I prepared myself academically and psychologically. To be honest, the language part is not the toughest one, my thought is. How to engage in the local community? How to keep up with the teachers? How to write some eligible essays? Those questions are really confused. At the same time, I felt a little bit lonely and scared. Getting to be familiar with a brand new environment and go through the culture shocks during COVID time is absolutely challenging.
However, I feel good nowadays. I met lots of lovely friends and teachers, I am not alone anymore. For those issues, I guess I have to experience and then have the answers.

It's really a terrific chance to learn in Manchester. By this week, I've already got to know the curriculums we are going to study and finish choosing the optional courses both in semeter 1 and 2. In the blackboard, our tutors give us several materials to read in advance and also give us the reading list for the whole session. I've completed some of them. I see it's such a challenging task due to the tomes we need to read. But I believe I would enjoy it in the future.
In addition, I'm going to Manchester at Oct.14th, so for sever first weeks I have to study online. I'm looking forward to have F2F class in next month.
Finally, happy to see you all :)

In order to better adapt to my postgraduate life at the University of Manchester, I’ve already done several preparations, such as taking part in the pre-sessional course, trying to change my bio-clock and searching for tremendous information about MA International Education and Manchester (climate, temperature, eating habitats, etc.).

However, from my perspective, the most important preparation I’ve done is to build self-confidence. Since I will face new classmates and professors, a new environment, and different teaching methods at the University of Manchester, I feel nervous and anxious for a long time. Therefore, I attempted to find out my advantages and gave me the self-suggestion that I could do well in the future study, fortunately, the results of these efforts are obvious. But it takes a long time to cultivate self-confidence, so I still have to work hard on it.

I hope these preparations can help me perform better in both life and study!

To prepare for the start of my Master’s degree at the UoM, the most important thing I did is moving into an apartment and living alone for this summer. I make this decision because I know there will be jet lag when I begin to study remotely. If I continue to live with my parents, they might have to be very careful not to make noises when I am attending online classes. When I have seminars at midnight, the noise of discussing with my group members might also disturb their sound sleep. Not to interrupt each other’s normal life, I decided to move out as a result. This is really an important decision for me to make as I had never been live alone before. From then on, I start to take care of myself on my own completely though I do not master some essential skills to live alone like cooking skills. Therefore, as you can imagine, my life this summer is a hundred percent challenge for me. At first, it’s really torturing to eat what I cook for myself, and sometimes I also get injured during cooking like slicing my finger by accident or getting burned by splashing hot oil. Another big challenge for me is that I have to get familiar with the surrounding where there is only me. Before I move to this apartment, I used to live with my parents at home or with my four roommates in dormitories so I never experience the feeling of loneliness. After moving out, I feel isolated because I have no family members or friends to chat with me in person. I know it’s hard to overcome this negative feeling but I have to get accustomed to it as this is what I might face when I arrive in Manchester for the first few weeks. Luckily, I master the essential skills for living alone in the end and get accustomed to the feeling of isolation, and learn how to mitigate this feeling positively. Now I am confident that I can take care of myself well when I get to Manchester later this year. Therefore, I think moving out to an apartment is the most important thing I did for the preparation for my life at the University of Manchester.

I go to the gym every day to maintain a certain amount of exercise, and eat healthily. A healthy body is undoubtedly the first condition for me to devote myself to study.
In addition, I redecorated my bedroom since I will be studying online in my room for the next few months. I will regularly put some flowers in my room to keep myself in a vibrant environment. So I didn't do anything specific, but it's really important for me to make these adjustments.

I prepared for a long time before going to school. First of all, I don't think I can communicate well with teachers offline, and there is no atmosphere for class. In order to have a better class, I choose offline classes. So there's a whole series of preparations. I divide them into three categories, one is preparation for life, the other is preparation for study. Life on the preparation of rent, buy air tickets, visa and so on. But the time difference is still not used to, I will try to adjust to the life here as soon as possible. In terms of study, I attended the language class, where I learned a lot and basically got an understanding of the teaching method of future courses. And I think the biggest progress in my language is that I can communicate with tutors, and I am not so afraid before. Finally, the psychological preparation, I think I have fully prepared for the upcoming class, but I hope teachers and students can help me more, I know I still have a lot of shortcomings.

Personally, I think the most challenging thing for me to prepare for my master's degree is to learn to get over culture shocks. The difficulties and differences in ways of communication or building up new relationships with different people have once made me nervous about the study in nearer future.

Luckily, for the past few weeks, I had participated in the pre-sessional classes and it did help me a lot. The kindness I have felt from my tutor Abda and the writing or seminar skills I have learned in courses contributed much to my self-confidence. Besides, I also tried to get more knowledge of the UK from Youtube or other resources. For example, I have already been a follower of BBC news and manchester university on Youtube and to improve my listening skill, I have watched and translated TED and the Economist lectures every day, which I think might assist me to better adapt to the foreign environment and overcome culture shocks.

Though there are still abundant uncertainties in front of me, the excitement of meeting new friends and learning new things have filled up my mind. Looking forward to seeing you guys!

I think my summer research program focused on international education has really helped me to get more beneficial experience for my master study.

My undergraduate degree major used to be different from my current program in Manchester. I had never focused on the conceptions of international education before but it was that program that helped me to have a deep exploration on a cross-culture comparison for educational policies. I've spent many hours writing my essay. It was hard and torturing, but I do believe it helped me to understand how hard the coming master's program is . Writing an essay of 3000 words is not an easy thing. I will have to undertake that for several times for the comming year. At least I have done it in advance in the summer time.

Honestly the most critical thing that I have done for this programme is to stablize my moods as I suffer from bipolar disorder for quite a long time. Being immersed to a new environment is never a easy thing for me, let alone in a cross-cultural living content. Therefore in summer I connected with my former classmates who have been studying in UK, to consult many things here, including customes and other things, as their experience can help me to get accustomed to the new life ASAP. In addition I tried to do some pre-reading so that I may not be barricaded by huge amounts of reading tasks. With such in minds, I am eager to start a new journey here.

The most important thing I have done to prepare for the start of my Master's degree at the University of Manchester is to get in the habit of looking at my "blackboard" often. In my point of view, the study of master degree is totally different from the study of bachelor degree. I need to pay attention to the preparation of lessons. Since my English is weak, I must spend more time on my study in order to keep up with the rhythm of teachers. Good luck for me!

In order to enjoy my Master’s degree life at the University of Manchester, I do some preparation.

There is no doubt that I must practice more in English to adjust to the English-speaking environment. So I begin to watch some foreign videos like English TV series commentaries to train my listening, which I hope can help me get used to native English. Also, I am likely to learn how to say some objects solely around us in our daily life once I see them. That’s quite useful, I think, because it is convenient for me to enrich my vocabularies by osmosis.

Besides, on account of a new country for me, I always read its map online remember some symbolic buildings to familiarize the city before my arrival. Unfortunately, I believe it failed now because maybe I have no sense of direction and I haven’t remembered them. As a result, I prefer to experience the city with my own feet when I really live here later.

I look forward to my new life and specific experiences in Manchester.🥳

After I got the offer from The University of Manchester, I felt that as a prospective postgraduate student, my spontaneous spoken English is not very fluent , so every night I would record my own conversation practice before going to bed, and when I met a jam, I would immediately look through the books to find the correct expression and perfect my own sentences. The video recording is a way to observe the growth and progress of my oral English. As time went by, I did find that my oral English was improving, and I was no longer ashamed to communicate with others in English and became more and more confident.

In order to understand the local culture and help me to integrate into the local students in the UK, I also watched some British movies during my summer vacation. At that time, my English learning began to be closer to life application. I asked my senior students for some notes and contents of studying abroad, including some critical thinking articles, which benefited me a lot.

When it comes to the most important thing I have done to prepare for the start of my Master’s degree at the University of Manchester, the first thing that comes to my mind is that I become a more independent individual and a better time manager. Because when I decided to study in Manchester, it was already at the beginning of August. The reason for the sudden decision is the policy change in my country. Also, I really want to study in Manchester on campus, which means I have to finish all of the stuff in a very short time. Meanwhile, I have a really busy job. So I put all the things I need to do in my timetable in different priorities, and of course, there are some emergent situations, but I finish them one by one by myself. All the things I have done made me become a more independent individual and a better time manager. I think a student in possession of independence and good time-management skills is more likely to study well in the UoM.

Getting the offer from the University of Manchester always gave me a sense of unreality until the moment I stepped into Manchester airport to make me feel like I was going to school. There is a lot of preparation that goes into a master degree. For example, I forced myself to read some English articles. When I watch TV dramas, I try not to read the Chinese subtitles and just rely on my listening to see if I can understand. I also tried very hard to understand what each professor was saying at the beginning of the welcome week. After the first half-year of my internship, I found it hard to go back to the way I was when I was in school. So I am trying hard to adjust my routine to get back to my previous state. I am preparing myself for the new period of my study.

My preparations for my Manchester master’s degree mainly come into three parts:
1.Improving life skills

I have never lived alone before. Although I have experience of studying far from hometown and parents when I was an undergraduate, I got roommates who could reach me a hand in daily life at that time. To be independent is what I need now.
2.Learning English

English is not my first language, but I have to use it in my master’s degree study. It is not only the language but also the culture behind the language that matters in language learning. So I take online English courses, watch British documentaries and dramas, imitate speech of characters in British TV series, and observe passer-by on roads in Manchester.
3.Selecting courses

I think the most important thing is to choose optional courses. It seems that every course is very interesting, but I can’t choose every course. Thus it is critical that I select the courses that suits me. I take four things into consideration: 1) is the course related to my final dissertation; 2) do I have the basic qualifications for the course; 3) does the course content appeal to me; 4) am I able to arrange my time if I choose these courses. After getting advice from my sister who is a TESOL postgraduate and listening to the course introduction, I made my final decision.

Before coming to UK, I have done lost of things to get myself ready for the new life. The most important things I would say are following.

First, I have taken part in a summer internship about Education. Since the prevalence of COD-19, it is common for students to study online. I was so lucky to join in an Internet company and get involved in online education. During the process, I not only figure out the difference between traditional education and digital education which could be simply described as learning efficiency, the main barrier for both teachers and students to overcome, but also get a primary know about how to use various software, such as zooms and applets, to organize classes. What I want praise is the applet in Wechat which is designed for students in kindergartens and primary schools, because it works as a supervisor to remind learners of what they should do at a certain time.I would say this experience gives me a basic understanding about the education in this special period, and inspire me to learn more about digital education in Manchester.

Secondly, I spent lots of time getting myself familiar with locals, such as the accommodation, food, nearest supermarkets as well as the transportation. At the beginning of May, I fortunately found five roommates and I was told that there is a shared kitchen in my flat, so I began to learn how to cook not only for the convenience of myself but also for the purpose of sharing meals with my new friends. Besides, I was so fascinated about some views in UK, so I planned several trips to London, Edinburgh, York and so on. All of above makes me look forward to my postgraduate life in Manchester

In order to study abroad, the requirement of my language is much more higher than it does at homeland. It should not only allows me to communicate with people in daily life but also needs the understanding of academic articles and the ability of academic writing. The second preparation is for the life skills. I have never live alone in another city far away from my parents and should do everything by my self. All the things in my room and daily life should be solved by myself so I do have to improve my skills of cooking and managing time. All in all, the biggest challenge for me is to arrange my life in a reasonable and orderly manner, which I'm working on these days.

Since my sophomore year, I've did some intern jobs about education, from being the tutor of primary school and middle school students to being a teacher in adult education industry, helping more and more students know how to study English in a more effective and efficient way. These experiences will eventually turn to be my valuable treasure in the study of my master degree period, giving me more material to think critically and more evidences to support my ideas during furture discussion.
Besides, due to the covid-19 and my arrival date, I got the chance to attend in the online classes for a short period. I think it will be a good transition for the persons, like me, who are kinda afraid of giving own ideas in seminar or who do not adapt to the brand new study mode for the moment. Hope that I could be attuned to the new learning pattern as soon as possible.
Next week, I will get to Manchester and start the journey of my one-year independent life.

The most important thing for me to prepare for postgraduate study is to be brave.

First, be brave to study in a different environment. Having studied in my own country for 16 years, I am used to the teaching mode here. Now in the UK, I find everything new and I need to be brave so that I can push myself to accept these new things.

Second, be brave to do what I want and try to do it as well as I can. I was shy in the class and after class. When I stayed in my home country, I always asked my parents for advice when facing difficulties or making choices. But before my postgraduate study, I encourage myself to be independent and make choices by myself, like what courses to take or which flat to live in. Once I made a choice, I would accept it and do it best even if I found it is inappropriate.

Third, be brave to meet new classmates from different cultural backgrounds. It is a commonplace for us to meet classmates all over the world when studying at the University of Manchester.

First of all, in terms of language, coming to Manchester to go to school is teaching in English. In order to ensure that I can fully understand the content of the professor's lecture and the fluency of communication, I watched a lot of videos about accents in different parts of the UK during the summer vacation and became familiar with the English sound. And in order to better participate in the seminar, I will do follow-up exercises when I have time. Second, with regard to pedagogy, I used to watch TV dramas in various countries without thinking about the educational issues presented in them. Because I chose the education major, I subconsciously analyze the similarities and differences in the education of different countries in the TV series.

I hope to meet you in the classroom at the University of Manchester soon.

For me, the most important thing I have done to prepare for the start of my Master's degree at the University of Manchester is to change.
First, changing my daily habits. After enjoying my last summer vacation, I come to England to start a new chapter as a postgraduate. During the summer holiday, the first thing to do when I wake up is checking my social media like Wechat and Weibo, but now the first thing I do is checking my student email to see courses update and important information.
Second, changing my mentaily. In China, we hardly have seminars. Basically students listen and take notes in classes. Students and teachers don't have many interactions in classes. However, in my postgraduate courses there are many seminars requiring group discussions and dedate which encouraging students to speak for themselves and bravely express their own ideas. Frankly speaking, I am not a student who are fond of sharing my ideas because I am afraid I may make mistakes or others may disagree with me. But now I am willing to change my attitudue and try to speak more in the new semester.

Since I decided to apply for a Manchester Master degree, I have made a lot of effort. At the beginning, I just scanned postgraduate programme websites of Manchester everyday which lasted nearly two monthes. Then I was going to prepare for my personal statement. Actually that was the first time I have thought about my academic and career planning in such a clear way, and while writing the personal statement, I also learned a lot about the dynamics of the education industry and some policies and future trends in my country. It took me about a month to conceptualize and write and revise constantly, so I think to prepare a clear personal statement is the most significant thing I have done for this master degree.

As an international student, my first preparation is to accept the cultural shock. We have completely different cultural backgrounds, and there is a big gap in the way of learning. So I found some seniors who were studying there and asked them how they feel about studying abroad. After all, their experience is much richer than mine.

Before coming to Manchester, I learned a lot of life skills from my mother, like how to select food and cook so that I can quickly adapt to living alone in a foreign country. I think this is also an important foundation that can support me to complete my studies.

Of course, it is very important to overcome language barriers. In order to be able to quickly adapt to learning in English, I listened to English news every day during the summer vacation. I hope that the persistence of these two months will be helpful to the postgraduate study.

For international education , I hope that my students in the future can love my class and me, so some necessary skills are needed. I tried to teach my sister English in the summer vacation, but from that practice, I found that sometimes I was unable to start my course when I actually operated them. This drove me to work harder in my post graduate study.

Hello, everyone, I'm Juan Guo, you can call me Molly. Honestly, it's important and brave for me to choose MA Educational Leadership as major, because I studyed in logistics when I was an undergraduate. That means I don't have background knowledge relating to education or leadership, so I need to work hard and prepare for every course. What's more, I have gotten into the habit of finishing tasks as soon as possible, instead of delaying them to deadline.

Hello, everyone, here is PANG YUTING, you can call me as Helen if it is hard to pronounce my chinese name. For me, I did a lot of prepared work in the past 2 years since I was really intersted in Manchester education curriculum. On second year of my degree study, I started to take internships in Malaysia local schools and international kindergartens to practice my teaching skills. Firstly, I felt challenged in applying theories to real class management. For example, I had to take care of some students behavious while I was giving a learning activity. However, through effective dicussions with other experienced teachers and improvement in class strategies, I could handle a class size from 5 students to 20 students class size by myself. Before applicating master program, I looked through the Manchester course details, I realized the importance of teaching appraoches, so I learned and got American TESOL Expert Certificate to make sure I could get a better foundation for master learning. I never think that a certicficate will represent all things, so I will try to explore more potentials and skills while learning in SEED courses. In addition, it was a liitle hard for me to cirticak thinking on contents and take good notes when tutors spoke quickly sometimes. To overcome it, I already made some plans in further practices and study, such as listening to BBC videos and education websites. Besides, I regiesterd for a free english course in ULC to get trainings in academic english. Finally, I am excited to meet all of you who have same enthusiasm in educational career. See you on Monday!

To be honest, it’s not until the welcome week that I had the feeling of starting my postgraduate study. Because, I don’t have to attend pre-sessional course, and for some reasons, I choose to study remotely throughout this semester. Not being in Manchester and having no pre-study, it seems that I have to do nothing.
But when inspiring by the first two welcome briefings this week, I realized there is something I can do to prepare myself for the future challenging study. Firstly, I adjusted my daily schedule well. Instead of getting up and staying up late during the summer vacation, I wake up early and have a cup of coffee. Then, I am getting used to checking up my email and blackboard to see if there is any new notification. I also start to read some materials already available for our courses. Of course, I should be used to BST, too. It’s quite funny that I missed half an hour of the first welcome briefing because I just assumed British time is always 8 hours behind Chinese time.
But actually, when talking about studying abroad, living and dealing with everything alone is also a challenge. So actually, I didn’t do nothing during my vacation. I learnt to cook, dealt with the bank alone, got familiar with driving, made a list of what should I prepare before I go to Britain, and so on. For me, a person who studied in the same city from primary school to university, I believe this master programme in Manchester will not only contribute to my academic competence but also my self-care ability and interpersonal skills.
Anyway, I am looking forwards to my study life in Manchester!

Even if it is a little tough for me, I’ve still made some preparations to get everything ready.

Firstly, the most important thing I’ve done is to get familiar with the new learning mode, such as using the student system, getting used to checking emails and having seminar discussions, which is completely different my undergraduate learning pattern. Let me take one as an example, in my college experience, professors or lecturers seldom use E-mail to contact us and they just put all the assignments in our Wechat groups or clarify them in class instead of emailing us. So, I do not have the habit to check my E-mail constantly. But, from now on, I need to constantly check my email.

Secondly, schedule the course time on the calendar and make study plans in my memo. I have already printed some course plans and download the courseware for each course and preview it in advance.

Thirdly, improve my language proficiency. In one way, in order to speak English more fluently, I practice my oral English on a daily basis and listen to foreign news as supplements. In the other, I keep reading English newspaper and magazines to enrich my vocabulary and reading ability.

Finally, try to maintain a good state of mind and be confident in myself.
I suppose that the most important preparation I did for joining postgraduate course was to summarize the key knowledge about academic writing and speaking(how to write essay and prepare for seminars) in pre-sessional course. I really appreciate that.

From my perspective, the competence of time management is important for study.

When I was an undergraduate, I worked hard to improve my GPA to ensure that I could apply for the University of Manchester. Moreover, I found some jobs and anticipated some volunteer activities to enrich my personal statement. When I was in my senior year, I began to think about what graduate major I wanted to choose. Combined with my previous work experience and future planning, I hoped I could engage in education-related work. These are all my plans for myself and why I choose to study educational leadership at The University of Manchester. Since English is my second language, I need to study English harder to ensure my study goes smoothly. Also, I have not learned any knowledge about education, so I need to read more literature or listen to lectures to improve my knowledge reserve.

To be honest, the pre-sessional course really helped me a lot. After contacting the course, I found that academic writing was quite different from what I had imagined. Academic writing should be careful to avoid some phrases, for example, I think, in my opinion and from my point of view and so on. In the writing process, I need try my best to use practical examples and other relevant or supporting ideas from other papers. This prepared me a lot for the professional courses of postgraduate study in the future. The pre-sessional class also helped me understand the way of study in advance, which made it easier for me to participate in graduate study.

In fact, I felt quite nervous when I received my offer from University of Manchester, for I am not sure whether this major is what I need, which is a little different from what I expected. But now I am very happy with my choice and feel honoured to be here. This summer holiday, I watched a lot of British dramas to familiarize myself with the British accent and culture. I think one of the most important things I did was that in August I started to re-read my textbooks for TESOL and some journal articles. I think doing some academic reading in advance will help deepen my understanding of this major and help me adapt to the massive reading after the semester begins. In the process of reading academic articles, I realized that there are still many missing parts in my knowledge system, so I'm going to work harder and reflect more about what and how I’ve learnt. I hope I can be fully prepared for being a teacher of English with the help of the excellent teachers in UoM.

According to my own situation, I have prepared for academic writing and reading through the pre-sessional course.
Firstly, I think writing is a necessary skill that everyone needs to learn. In fact, most of our courses are evaluated by essays. Thus, an explicit and well-formed essay could be easier to understand. (eg. essay body includes topic, development and support. )
Reading skills are equally important. Due to the requirement of our subject, mountains of journals and books need to be read. However, our time is limited which means we are unable to read all of them and remember all topics and results they discuss. Therefore, we should select different reading skills (skim or scan) to handle different types of articles and we could do some templates at the same time in case we need to review them after a long time.

Before my study at Manchester University, I practiced English so that I could reach the language level required by the University. Due to my poor English foundation, I experienced some struggles, but finally I successfully achieved the target score. In addition, since I am an interdisciplinary graduate student, I have also read some relevant literature, such as Piaget and Vygotsky's pedagogical theory. Although it is only a glimpse, it still gives me a little understanding of my major.

Before I started main course for my degree officially, I had done something specially for it.
First is participating a pre-sessional programme. This gave me a little taste of how the things would be like here. I got more confident and I felt more comfortable when dealing with a partly new thing for me.
And then, I tried my best to be alone. That may sound a little bit weird but it's really important for me. Being alone means I shouldn't depend on others tackling my own problems. I should think about study and live by myself.
The last one I want to mention is setting up my note-taking system. I prefer to take notes in everywhere at any time because I cherish the easy-to-lost inspiration. However, the outcome of it is every time looking back to the notes is a nightmare. So, writing them in a more systematic way is critical for my learning process.

For me, I have prepared the following aspects.First of all, I have a deeper understanding of education. I try to get a deeper understanding of the education profession. I have a deep interest in the school curriculum.Secondly, I am going to read some literature and materials to enrich my knowledge and prepare for the next course. More importantly, I need to practice English more so that I can better adapt to the course.Leaving home and coming to a foreign country, I need to adapt to the life here and adjust my lifestyle. In life, I need to remind myself at all times, make a plan, and arrange my life and study time. Encourage myself more, remind myself more, so that I can enter the learning state faster. In addition, I asked my classmates and friends studying in the UK how to study and live better. Hope everything goes well in the new semester.

For me, it is a challenge to study in Manchester, because I have never been to any forging country before, which means I have to adapt to many things in life and study. I made this decision last year, and throughout the whole year I keep improving my ability in different aspects like reading and writing. I also attended the pre-sessional courses and learnt a lot of skills about the academic writing. For a better learning experience, I chose to attend the courses on campus , because I think it will make me become more concentrated. In the coming session, I will do enough preparation for courses and finish the tasks in time ,try to read some relevant materials for each course. I hope I can make the most of this year to improve myself.

For me, it is being real independent. Though I was a college student, studying in another province far from my hometown, I still depend a lot on my parents. I have to take their opinions into consideration for most time, since their advice could be more mature and helpful. However, when I prepared coming to British, I suddenly realized that there would be a huge gap between my parents and I, no matter time or space. I have to learn to rely on myself, instead of being protected by my parents. Therefore, I really prepared a lots for my postgraduate study alone. For study, I search lots of experiences of other class-attenders, trying to figure out about my major and classes. For my future life, I rent my own studio by myself, buying some daily stuffs online for one-year life and getting my visa. I assume that all of these could be counted as my preparation for my master degree, since keeping a good mood on daily life is always good for study, and what's more, being independent is also quite essential while making endeavors to my postgraduate study.

I gained some experience of teaching and getting to know more about teen students through the year, which also allowed me to gather some ideas about my PG dissertation.

The second thing I did is to read some academic materials in education trying to build up a theoretical foundation. However, to be honest, it is very challenging as there are too many of them and the field is too broad.

Lastly, I started to do yoga every day to keep fit and energetic and live in a healthier routine. My learning in Manchester is absolutely not only for the Master's degree. What is more important is that through this period of learning, what can I do to help the later learners to learn more effectively. The process of my thingking and the conclusions I came up with is the most important preparation for my Manchester Master's degree.

First of all, I'd like to say this is a very good question which allows students to express their wide variety of opinions quite safely and comfortably. To be honest, this is my second master's degree. My first master's degree is in linguistics, particularly cognitive linguistics which is very much based on cognitive psychology and the philosophy of mind. At that time, I was really fascinated by the subject. Various language production processes, especially the seemingly abnormal language constructions (e.g. middle constructions) really garnered my attention. And my immature findings really culminated in some good research topics at our school at that time. But, I also felt thwarted from time to time as I could not see clearly the research meanings in linguistics, or broadly in all the art subjects. The feeling that I seemed to be unable to make equally valuable contributions (just like those of students who major in STEM subjects) to the society really frustrated me, which seemed to be quite ridiculous but did make me anxious at that time. Fortunately, however, the problem finally got fixed by me. Wanna know how? Well, due to space limitations, I will not elaborate on it here, but if you're interested in it, we can have further discussions after class. All in all, I have zero doubt in the meaning of art subjects now, or accurately speaking, I'll no longer make comparisons between the meanings of different subjects. Be it art subjects or STEM subjects, so long as the subject of research or study matters to you, it has an indelible meaning. That perhaps is the most important preparation I made for my master's degree in the University of Manchester. I've learned to probe deeply into where my interest really lies and am also able to move wholeheartedly forward.

I went to Manchester to study for my master's degree. The most important preparation I made during this period was to say goodbye to my mother. I chose "face to face teaching" in the school questionnaire. It seems to be the greatest decision in my life.
As a native of Shanghai, China, who hasn't left home for more than a month in 21 years, I left home for the first time for a whole year. My mother and I had varying degrees of separation anxiety. In the month I was leaving, I often had a sudden emotional breakdown. I wanted to give up this decision and turn to online classes. I wanted to continue to stay with my family. This is very naive and unreasonable. After all, I have been an adult for many years. This is a late separation.
Packing, preparing documents for leaving and entering the country, and finding accommodation are simple, as long as you are patient and careful. But it is difficult to do a good job in psychological construction. I am very honored that I did not give up in the end. Now that I am in Manchester City, I believe I will cherish this time.

The most important thing I have done to prepare for the start of my master's degree is to pass the IELTS exam. Actually, this exam is not extremely hard for me, but it has really put plenty of pressure on me several months ago. It's because at that time, I was preparing for my TEM8 (Test for English Majors-Band 8), which is the most difficult and significant certificate for me. Besides, I was writing my dissertation and doing an internship in a highschool. （The internship is required by my university.）Therefore, I was extremely busy and tired during that period of time. What's worse, I was almost suffering from depression because my draft of dissertation didn't make my tutor satisfied, so I thought probably I wouldn't graduate on time. What's more, I have to pass the IELTS exam on the first try because I won't have time to prepare for it again.

As for the IELTS exam, the most challenging part is the oral test, because I'm an introverted girl who seldom talks too much with unfamiliar people. Being proactive and having a smooth dialogue with the examiner is impossible. I can't help feeling embarrassed to speak English in front of native speakers, which makes my answer to the exam questions less and less. Afterwards, I turned to a good English teacher, she helped me so much and gave me a great deal of confidence. She said, you have a good hang of English and please get rid of self-contemptuous. Remember you are the best!

Then, I was touched and practiced oral English every day during that month. In the end, I passed the IELTS exam, got good grades in TEM8, and finished my dissertation. I think I am lucky but the success is not baseless.

Although academic preparation is important , mastering some basic life skills is also necessary, such as cooking. Learning how to cook is the most important thing of preparation for the new life in Manchester. Food is the most significant thing in our daily life and we can not live without it. As takeaway food is costly and unhealthy in UK, it is necessary for us to cook by ourselves. Thus I started to learn cooking food a month before the journey by watching the recipe videos on several apps and watching the cooking process of my mom. By now, I have mastered some basic Chinese cuisine, which is yummy and nutrient. I have been in Manchester for 2 days and I have got to known all of my roommates. One of my roommates is really expert at cooking and I learned a lot form her. In the future, I really hope I can learn and practice more recipes.

I have decided to study at the university of Manchester 4 years ago. At the very beginning, it’s just because I like the colour of purple. Then, I found out there’s a course I’m really interested in(international education) because being a teacher is always a dream for me. I hope to take part in shaping the next generation so I prepared myself to get into uom. From internship to academic performance, I’ve equipped myself with different kinds of knowledge and school to get into the school but none of them as important as British culture. For the past 4 years, I’ve learned a lot of British culture such as British slang, food or attitude. I didn’t know cheers also means thank you before I know about British culture. Knowing British culture allows me to adapt myself quickly to this country. Manchester is a city known for diversity and this is why I choose uom. Everyone here I met so far is absolutely helpful and friendly, and I can’t wait for the coming adventure.

In my past study, I was rarely faced with a lot of self-study and reporting, and I did not personally experience the teaching model and evaluation model adopted by UoM. Therefore, for me, I will face a new mode of life and learning, and I think timely adjustment of mentality is the prerequisite to prepare for all this. Only after I adapt myself to the life and study of a graduate student can I explore knowledge actively and have the possibility to think more about personal development and education.

Firstly, I would say, I am so excited for my following year at the University of Manchester because this is my first time to go to UK.

In my eyes, the most important thing I have done for the preparation of the start of my Master’s degree is about Courage. Because of the covid-19, from June to July, I felt very frustrated about whether or not go to Manchester for my semester 1 in person. In the beginning, I felt like I can’t be there because I was afraid of the terrible virus. I asked myself again and again, what do I want to gain from the 1 year master degree at the University of Manchester? As the time went by, at last, a voice from my deep heart said ‘ go there for the real life experience in Manchester.’. The project I choose for my master degree is International Education. So the culture exchange should be the first barrier I need to go over and try to find the balance point. One year will be very a short time, especially during my whole life. So I feel I should be in Manchester in-person, I am eager to experience differences and happiness and unhappiness in-person. The only thing I can do is to try to protect my health and try very hard on my postgraduate programme.

I will fly to Manchester on 14th October. It will be a unimagined travel in my life. Now, I feel very confident about myself with no more fear. And I call this Courage.

I did a lot of preparation for my postgraduate studies at the University of Manchester.

Firstly, I worked hard to obtain a Chinese teaching qualification and an international teaching qualification - Tesol Advanced to qualify myself as an English teacher.

Secondly, in order to overcome the language barrier, I have been practicing my listening and speaking as well as insisting on doing intensive listening and shadow reading.

Finally, I have experience in teaching English by working as an English tutor and teaching assistant in my extra-curricular undergraduate life.

Because of the COVID-19, there is a long period of time for me to study online courses, so I downloaded a lot of learning software to get myself up to speed with it, and I would take each course and assignment seriously to keep improving myself.

I had the thought about studying abroad when I was in high school, because I want to live in a totally different culture which is challenging and interesting, so after I entered college, I prepared for it. First, I asked for some teachers about studying abroad and they gave me many suggestions about how to prepare for it. I focused on my GPA and also some other abilities including internships experience. Before I applied for this subject, I learned some relative courses in my undergraduate study to get to some basic information about education. Also, I had two internships in a small local education institution in China. During this time, I learned a lot, not only the teaching experience but also some rules and lessons. It’s very exciting that I can take the master degree in UoM.

Since I am not only a student but also a mother of my little baby, the most important thing for me to start my Master's degree is to arrange my time more reasonably and efficiently. In this summer vocation, I devoted most of my time to my child. My daily mission was to accompany him at home, go out to play with other children, and put him to bed until he fell asleep every night. But now, my life begins to be divided into two main parts, and I have tried to learn how to manage my time better so that I can gain more knowledge as well as still bring happiness to my little boy. You know, balancing the relationship between child and study is always not an easy task, and I have to gain more and more experience in the future life. Another thing I have done to prepare for my university life is going to the gym and building up a stronger body so that I have more strength and energy to meet the unknown challenges in my next stage study.

I think the most important thing I have ever done is to pass the pre-session exam, because it directly affects whether I can enter this major. Secondly, I learned a lot of useful seminar language and writing skills in the pre-session class, which I believe will be of great help to my future study.

i think the most important thing i did for my master course is taking the presessional course. i need to take it because i did not have a high-enough ielts score and that means my English was not good enough to live and study in Manchester.and this course gave me a lot of chances to practice. Though my English skill may still be not that good, i am more confident than before.

The most important part of my preparation is developing relevant knowledge and skill. I spent a lot of time and energy on English learning. Besides, I worked as a volunteer teacher in a small village and served as a foreign teacher assistant in a vocabulary summer camp. These experience allows me to contact and learn about the education industry, which will help me be more targeted and motivated in my future study.

The first and most important thing I have done to prepare myself for this course is to make sure my little boy is taken care of while I am studying. I have been meaning to take MSc Research Methods with Education for more three years now. This year my little boy is in full-time education so it is easier for me to study.

To begin with, one of the most important preparation is that I attended the pre-sessional courses. During these courses, I learnt some academic writing skills and how to discuss in a seminar. I think this preparation is quite useful as we will have discussion in our classes and some essay assignments in the future. What’s more, as for mental preparation, I try to encourage myself to overcome the culture shock. Because attending a master degree is a really big challenge for me as there is totally different culture background and different language.

The most important thing I have done is, emotionally, making this decision that study the MA programme on campus. After getting through my own mental barrier about the danger and uncertainty of going abroad in this pandemic period, I needed to persuade my parents to agree on my journey. This is not the first time I go abroad, but it is the hardest one for we need to prepare a lot more than usual. However, I don't think I will regret it as this will be a memorable year in my life, I believe.

I think firstly the strong determination about being a teacher matters the most, so I have taken several internships related to eye aching, from which I benefit a lot, such as communication with colleagues, students. Besides, from a wider perspective, during the practical experience, I have better known the different teaching methods, and how to adapt to my teaching process, also I had the opportunity to speak out my opinion about how to better establish the education system in a small context based on the different ages of students.
Secondly, i have finished my bachelor study as English major student, to some extent, it has eliminated the adaptation process of the whole English speaking environment in class, meanwhile, I have learnt the basic skills of reading academic papers and writing essays.
