Where it’s found

The Mediterranean coastline is one of only five regions of the world that support this biome.

What it looks and feels like

Hot, dry summers, with most precipitation falling during the cool, damp winters. Each location where this biome is found supports a community of plant species that are highly unique to the area. Due to this high degree of endemism, this biome collectively supports a full 10% of Earth’s plant species.

What grows

Plant communities that ring the Mediterranean vary greatly by location and may include forests composed of oak trees and evergreen shrubs, oak or pine woodlands, savannas, grasslands, and shrublands. Most plants have adapted to and depend on periodic wildfire disturbances to survive.

The tropical rain forest of Xishuangbanna is the Yunnan province of China. Is one of the largest forets in Asia at 19,223 km. In recent years, the region has been opened up to use in a large scale and the primary forests, especially rain forests, have been severely destroyed. Xishuangbanna is included in the Indo-Bruma biodiversity hotspots and contains over 5,000 species of vascular plants, comprising 16% of China's total plant diversity. This tropical rain forest entails also a very diverse fauna of birds, mammals, and reptiles and amphibians, which represent 36%,21% and 14% of China's biodiversity respectively.

Katerina Puigpinós

Kenneth Daniel
