-Mining can be considered a core element to industrialization as it not only fuels these factories but also supplies the raw materials we need in order to import and export different products as trade between countries. The Philippines is known to be the fifth most mineralised country in the world, with the third largest deposits of gold, fourth for copper, fifth for nickel and sixth for chromite thus mining industries thriving with what they specialize in; However, over time, mining has now become more dangerous through the different methods used to attain these rocks and minerals as it is now destroying our environment as we know it.

Source:
https://www.austrade.gov.au/australian/export/export-markets/countries/philippines/industries/mining

1) Landslides that were caused by the destructive mining

One of the first landslides that happened after the typhoon struck was in the northern mining town of Itogon. The Itogon Landslide buried about 60 people, most being miners and their family members. The Philippine Officials say that this landslide was affected by an area where a gold mine was being operated illegally. They mentioned that due to illegal and excessive mining, this could weaken hillsides which may cause landslides. The second landslide struck in the central province of Cebu which affected two villages and buried 30 homes. More than 20 people were killed, said by the local officials. The landslide was probably caused by several mining operations near the villages.

Source:
https://learningenglish.voanews.com/a/philippines-examines-mining-operations-after-landslide-deaths/4581793.html#:~:text=Philippine%20officials%20said%20the%20landslide,area%20before%20the%20storm%20hit.

3) Marcopper Mining Disaster of 1996

-March 24, 1996- More than 1.6 Million cubic meters of toxic mine tailings from a fracture in the drainage tunnel of Marcopper Mining Corporation’s Taipan pit flooded villages and poisoned rivers, exposing the people to toxic elements that are still a problem today after 24 years. Even back then excessive mining was still present and due to that did it put people’s health on the line. Until this day, it is still a large issue that needs to be resolved as the amount of damage it has done not only to the environment but as well as towards the people as it became a tragedy within their blood and veins and a reminder towards the government as it also became a drastic turning point of changes and reformation to our country's mining policy.

Source:
https://miningwatch.ca/news/2019/4/3/marcopper-disaster-tragedy-continues-people-s-veins?__cf_chl_jschl_tk__=572cbc926c6091ed52931d043c562f158b5399a9-1612874564-0-AUQE-SQFiVz0EHh5pPJRVGFQEAbLqVFgUWN-Pa7OY11I75UYYc5_E6BzyqcmQdjunIvgBRXGJ-RXRPyw-HqRam-7EibYoKiQ4CZ5Wz-n1-_B7FJPOMrvnj-mdPQMxLWx65ARnPZTGNl2MS5zahyxQfwW2qtKf3BfBlP9JTgvbAnaJV2p0VhgYML6-iLr8Vu5t3ciCfTO482t2rZiBzDzJHGesvT5Qrxi7zntNegmuBgQ2l0ioViRZtJnIGOkYDnRUR5qskOb0fd0ioWECjGC18eBY7HAXJ4XrT3aBSWM04AClPHPWcqoxLTUneZS0yotBDxWT7E684F81rpXa6TOs5C0FPt-rHwBD7L1zl7KTdbT8IvMI8OSQdjMlZoGHqJvtcTI_XveiWH3adaKGhTGuoI

2) Emir Mineral Resources Corp & Mt. Sinai Mineral Exploration Corp Suspension of 2016

2016- The Philippine Government stopped two mining operations due to environmental violations as they produced 150,000 tonnes of nickel ore and extracted 50,000 tonnes of chromite. With the amount of materials they have, it has caused a silt build-up in coastal waters, deforestation and air pollution due to the fact that it also provided power and a source of energy to burn. In a way, excessive mining can lead to many outcomes, both good and bad; However, although results may vary, the fact that excessive mining can risk not only resources but the lives of many, both workers and civilians, is something we must always remember and consider.

Source:
https://www.reuters.com/article/us-philippines-mining-suspensions/philippines-suspends-two-more-mines-in-environmental-clampdown-idUKKCN10M0FK

As stated in our research, mining has a significant impact effect in an area’s economic development. It can be considered a core factor to industrialization. Mined materials are required in constructing certain infrastructures, manufacturing automobiles and electronics, and conducting electricity. And as said in the previous entries, The Philippines is known to be the fifth most mineralised country in the world, with the third largest deposits of gold, fourth for copper, fifth for nickel and sixth for chromite. Despite the wonderful and countless benefits that come from mining, when we abuse the plentiful resources we have, which we tend to do a lot, it can lead to bad outcomes as well.

Some given examples are erosion, the contamination of soil and loss of biodiversity, where we destroy habitats of animals that causes the number of their species to decrease at an alarming rate. Although, we still have the chance to make up for what we’ve lost and to improve our environment, by closing down a couple of mining areas and taking just enough resources, not more than we need.

1 ) Since the Philippines is a third world country, money is of course essential for our well-being. We live in a society where money and fortune is superior, which gives further meaning to the saying “money is what keeps our world running”. The more resources, the more we can import and export these materials to and from other countries.

2 ) The more that we are rich in these mineral resources, the more things that can be made and produced which can help supply our country and its people. Things we need and use in our daily life such as appliances, gadgets, vehicles and other modes of transportation.

3 ) The more mines that we have, the more people that are being employed. This could help people by giving them jobs and for them to earn income. With their hard work and service, it also helps benefit our economy.

1 ) Mines in the mountains of Surigao del Norte, in the southern Philippines. The government is planning a crackdown on mining operations accused of polluting Philippine waters. By having plenty of mine-pits, mountains are being deforested which harms the many animals living there. This could also further cause harm to us, things such as landslides and floods may occur. In the end, due to all the destruction, our environment is losing its beauty.
https://www.nytimes.com/2017/04/27/world/asia/philippines-mining-environment.html

2 ) The safety of the workers is constantly at risk. The miners are prone to be exposed to harmful gasses and contaminated groundwater. By being exposed to these chemicals, not only can it damage their health but it can also lead to death.

3 ) If a certain place has an abundant supply of ore and minerals, more people would want to invest and start their own mine-pits there. This could cause a greedy economy, because the more they mine for minerals, the more they’ll want. People will then start monopolizing everything to themselves. This could cause the mountains to crumble down and people will lose livelihood (both mine workers and civilians) due to lack of resources.

We can also take care of our environment by doing simple tasks like disposing of our garbage properly and minding each act we do because we never know how much damage it can cause. Also, not being selfish and knowing what’s too much are traits that are important to avoid destroying our surroundings even more. Mining companies should also probe into using sustainable materials and waste disposal methods. They should consider replenishing the environment and surroundings as frequently as possible, making the area habitable and more able to return to a natural state.

Conclusively, although mining has benefited our society in multiple ways, there are certainly some negative consequences. We also need to be aware of this situation and spread knowledge to others as well. For it increases enthusiasm and support, stimulates mobilization, action, local knowledge, and resources. Because once we give our best efforts to improve our environment, and inspire others to do the same, we can make better changes to our world.
