When Beowulf was battling Grendel, he refused to bring a weapon to defend himself since Grendel was the one to fight with just his hands. 'My hands alone shall fight for me' [ lines 172-173 ]. Another way that he proved his honor while in the battle with Grendel, was that when he ripped Grendel's arm off and hung it in the rafters for decoration. [ lines 355-360 ]

Beowulf exemplifies courage, in line 275 during the fight with Grendel, Beowulf uses his bare hands to take down Grendel. It takes alot of courage to take down a beast with your bare hands. Beowulf also exemplifies leadership for his men. In line 320 they all hack at Grendel as Beowulf holds him. They didn't do any damage, but it shows that Beowulf was their leader.

The trait that Beowulf exemplifies is the possession of supernatural abilities or qualities. This can be implied by the first description of Beowulf given. The text describes Beowulf as: "...Greater and stronger than anyone anywhere in this world"(Lines 110-111). Supernatural qualities are also displayed during the battle with Grendel. Beowulf is said to have ripped Grendel's arm off of his shoulder, a feat of such strength that it could not have been done by another (lines 335-340).

The first wxample of this is in lines 268-275 beowolf clenches grendels hand as grendel reaches for beowolf and bents his claws back, grendel then knew tgat instant he has never met a man with stronger hands before. The second example is on lines 358-360 beowolf hung the arm of grendel from the rafters of the mead hall, this shows beowolf is a fierce warrior for ripping grendels arm off in the battle
