One strength of personality as a factor that influences criminal behaviour (3 marks)

It can be applied to helping criminals. One way of doing this is by making young teens do a questionnaire which will allow psychologists to see if they have a personality which can cause criminal behaviour. Therefore, this can be used by teaching the parents how to nurture their child’s behaviour for example, if they have a high extrovert score, they need to always keep them entertained so that they don’t end up committing criminal activities in order to satisfy their need for excitement

Eyseck’s theory of personality explains criminal behaviour using social and biological factors, suggesting that a high PEN score (psychoticsm, extrovert and neuroticism) leads to criminal behaviour. This theory suggests that an underaroused CNS can cause impulsive behaviour, and can then lead to a more extroverted personality. An over active ANS can lead to a more neurotic individual, as they will react more strongly to anti-social situations. A high P score is due to levels of hormones, in particular testosterone. It is a combination of these factors that lead to criminal behaviour.

XYY Syndome 12 marker (jamie)

XYY Syndrome is where an individual has an extra male chromasome. It was at first associated with increased levels of aggression as the idea was an extra male chromosome would lead to double the normal levels of testosterone - the hormone related to aggressive response. However, this perspective was sensationalised and unrealistic as the majority of males living with XYY lead normal lives (for example the first individual found to have the condition). It is likely this incorrect conclusion was only formed as most of the research into XYY syndrome was conducted on aggressive prisoners. This meant the research lacked objectivity and was therefore low in validity. (Jamie)

A weakness of personality is that it is subjective because it uses a self report questionnaire to gather data. Also, social desirability would be an influence as people would want to look better with their results. Therefore the research is less reliable and therefore less credible.
