In "Big Red Lollipop" the most obvious pattern is sibling conflict. It appears first when the oldest child (Rubina) asks her mom if she can go to her friend's birthday party. Her mom says she is not allowed to go unless she brings her little sister (Sana). She is embarrassed, but she brings her sister to the party. At the party, they get big red lollipops to take home. Sana ends up eating most of Rubina's lollipop and her mom doesn't seem to care. At the end, Sana gets invited to one of her friends birthday parties and now her little sister (Maryam) wants to go. Her mom says the same thing that she said to Rubina. Throughout the book, the mom seemed to favor the younger sibling in allowing them to go to the birthday parties.

A vacuum turns into a giant squid, a paper towel roll into a monocular, socks into seagulls, and so much more. These everyday items take a family through a story of ups and downs, and their imagination takes them to the unknown.

In an interview that Sophie did with Roger Sutton, she told him that part of the reason that she wrote Ahoy! was because of her eldest child, Olive's, imagination as a kid. Sophie said that Olive always asked her mom to act like a patient so that they could be a doctor. Sophie would always do it, and Olive could slather her in lotions and bandages. This connects to the imaginative story in Ahoy!
