There were two main ways to help reform society, which was 1. Urban conditions and 2. Alcohol abuse. For urban conditions, social gospel supporters used churches to provide for the poor. For alcohol abuse, women's christian pushed for temperance, meaning reduced alcohol consumption. Child labor was especially dangerous in factories and mines. Many states passed laws that set minimum age or maximum work hours limits. Factory working conditions were often unsafe with no offered worker's compensation. The Triangle Shirtwaist factory fire led to improved labor safety codes in New York.

Who Was Ida Tarbell?

Ida Tarbell was an American journalist born on November 5, 1857, in Erie County, Pennsylvania. She was the only woman in her graduating class at Allegheny College in 1880. Tarbell exposed unfair practices of the Standard Oil Company, leading to a U.S. Supreme Court decision to break its monopoly.

Muckraking journalism started at the end of the 19th century largely in response to the excesses of the Gilded Age, and Ida Tarbell was one of the most famous of the muckrakers. Tarbell's first dream was to be a scientist. Science was a field largely closed to women, however, and she instead pursued teaching, a profession deemed more suitable for a woman.
-Jaquez
