After the Indian Rebellion of 1857, the British government took over administration to establish the British Raj. The British Raj was the period of British occupation of India. It was formed to trade in the Indian Ocean region, initially with Mughal India and the East Indies, and later with Qing China. The company eventually took control of large parts of India, colonized parts of Southeast Asia, and colonized Hong Kong after a war with Qing China. The British Raj lasted until 1947, when British rule in India was divided into two sovereign states: the Dominion of India and the Dominion of Pakistan.

The British Raj had a significant influence on Indian culture, for example through the widespread introduction of the English language, which resulted in a local English dialect and influences on Indian languages.

Cricket was introduced to India by the British. It is now the most popular sport in the country.

Between 1860 and 1920, the British incorporated the Indian caste system into their system of governance, granting administrative jobs and senior appointments only to Christians and people belonging to certain castes. There are 3,000 castes and 25,000 subcastes in India, each related to a specific occupation.

The British also placed the Christian religion in a separate section of India.

The term caste is derived from the Portuguese word casta, meaning "race, lineage, race" and originally "pure or unmixed". It was originally not an Indian word, but is now widely used in English and Indian languages, closely translated as varna and jati.
