Instead, it rushes into storm drains, which can lead to both flooding during storms and less groundwater replenishment for our local streams.

Human activity has impacted the earth by cutting down trees/deforestation. The trees usually let out water from their leaves through transpiration, but when humans cut down trees, there's no trees to DO the transpiration. It also has impacted earth by climate change! Yipee! Humans cause climate change by using fossil fuels release pollution into the air, polluting the water. Human devices also hurt the water cycle too with dams. Dams turn the water flow upwards, polluting it with mud and stuff. A few solutions are by using renewable energy more often to stop the pollution, cut down on how many trees we are cutting down, and use more river friendly ways to mange water flow to help the water cycle!

Humans have negatively impacted the water cycle by dams, irrigation, and deforestation. Dams impact the water cycle by affecting the river flow and the speed of the flow for the river. Irrigation is when water is pulled from the surface, causing devastating results. Lastly, deforestation impacts the water cycle by preventing plants from transpiration. Some solutions include not using pesticides for crops and not using hydroelectric for a main source of energy. Together we can work to create a better future for us and the environment. Mic, Drop.

                By: Carson Harris

Humans have impacted the water cycle negatively by Human activities, such as hydroelectricity generation, irrigation, deforestation, and greenhouse gas emissions, significantly disrupt the natural water cycle. Some solutions are stopping doing these things because this is what is disrupting our water cycle. We can stop emitting greenhouse gases by traveling less and riding a bike instead of driving a car or riding in an airplane. We also can stop deforestation by cutting trees down little by little instead of cutting down many at one time that is what is causing deforestation.

Bryce Boyers- Humans impacted the water cycle in many ways but there are ways to solve it. Humans put in dams, expel pollution into the water, and cut down forests. When people to do de-forestation, it hurts the transpiration process of the water cycle. Another thing is agriculture this can be fine but when people do it too much it can really hurt the water cycle. But there is some hope there are things people can do solve these problems. One solution is re-planting trees this can make sure we still have transpiration. Another thing is to not only limit agriculture but limit the number of pesticides used on crops because when the plants do transpiration it could be full of pesticides. So, in conclusion humans impact the water cycle a lot but there are solutions.

We are becoming increasingly aware of our impacts on nature. There is considerable evidence that humans are responsible for disruptions and changes to local and global water cycles.

Rights: The University of Waikato

Earth’s water distribution

A number of human activities can impact on the water cycle: damming rivers for hydroelectricity, using water for farming, deforestation and the burning of fossil fuels.

Different countries use different amounts of water, but we all tend to use them in the same ways, and some of these actions can impact on the water cycle – generating hydroelectricity, irrigation, deforestation and the greenhouse effect, as well as motor vehicle use and animal farming.

Hydroelectricity

Most of New Zealand’s electricity is generated using hydro dams. This involves changing the stored gravitational energy of water held behind the dam into electrical energy that can be used. While this is a non-polluting renewable way to generate electricity, it does have environmental impacts – especially when mismanaged.

Rights: The University of Waikato

Clyde hydro dam

The Clyde dam in the South Island uses water to generate electricity. It is New Zealand’s third largest hydro dam.

Rivers must be dammed, which can affect the function of the river both upstream and downstream – lakes are usually formed from the water accumulating above the dam and a build-up of silt can occur, while the amount of water is reduced further downstream. This can be problematic for any plants and animals that may find themselves with too much or too little water, and migrating fish cannot get through the dams.

Seriously mismanaged dams can result in droughts downstream, with smaller streams completely drying up, leaving areas of uncatered land. People then have to look at ways of getting more water into these dry areas.

Find out more about hydro power.

Irrigation

As the human population has increased, so have our demands on the land. We need more food, and to make food, we need water. Irrigation is the artificial watering of land that does not get enough water through rainfall. Irrigation is used substantially by most countries, some more than others. Arid (dry) lands require far more water, as do countries that have large intensive farming communities.

Rights: 123RF Limited

Spray irrigator

Irrigation is a method used to water farm land. Unfortunately it removes water from rivers and can cause surface run-off and leaching.

The problem with irrigation is that it removes water from its natural source and often causes leaching and run-off where it is used. This removal of nutrients results in farmers using more fertilisers to keep their pastures productive while the waterways become polluted. Another problem is that salt is brought up from lower levels (salination).

Deforestation

The removal of trees (deforestation) is having a major impact on the water cycle, as local and global climates change.

Normally, trees release water vapour when they transpire, producing a localised humidity. This water vapour then evaporates into the atmosphere where it accumulates before precipitating back to the Earth as rain, sleet or snow. Deforestation in one area can therefore affect the weather in another area because if trees are cut down, there is less water to be evaporated into the atmosphere and subsequently less rain.

At a local level, the land becomes drier and less stable. When it rains, instead of the water being soaked up, there is increased run-off and leaching. Areas can become more prone to both droughts and flooding, impacting on plants and animals, and also humans living near deforested areas.

Dynamic and complex: the global water cycle

Water in the Earth system is influencing all aspects of life on Earth. Pathways, storage, transfers and transformations have an effect on the global climate and human welfare. Within this interactive 4 scientists talk about some of the complex aspects of the water cycle.

There is no doubt that the water cycle impacts our lives, as humans. Humans, however, impact the water cycle too. Our actions as a species have effects on every step of the water cycle. In this post, let us dive deeper into the ways humans are affecting the water cycle. Although it can be overwhelming to think about the numerous ways that we impact this natural cycle – and I certainly felt a little overwhelmed in doing the research to write this post – my goal here is not to dishearten anyone about water resources. Change starts with education, and ultimately requires effort on both an individual and a larger scale. At the end of this post, I share some simple and inexpensive ways we can save water resources and reduce our impact on the water cycle. I also made a Saving Water Bingo game to help make learning about water resources fun for kids and to encourage simple steps in families’ daily routines to help save water!

Human activity can harm and help a lot. But I'm going to tell you what harm they do. Human activities that hurt the environment are deforestation air pollution, and etc. Deforestation is the extracting of forests and trees and stuff. Animals and plants live in forests and taking their home is very bad. Air pollution is also bad because people contaminate the air we breath.

Humans Have impacted the water cycle in MANY ways. A few examples include cutting down trees since they make water go into the atmosphere, or fossil fuels melting glaciers. We could fix these problems by using less fossil fuels and cutting down less trees.

wes westmoreland humans impact the water cycle by pollution that water vapor picks that polluted and gross water. this water will continue to go through the water cycle.

a good impact is that we clean oceans to keep this from happening with trash trawlers that filter the fish out of the net. (The picture is an example)

humans have also designed a water pool where filtered clean water enters a pool and will naturally be evaporated and go through the water cycle.
