People were not punished harshly for practicing medicine without a medical license throughout the 1830's. A common pill doctors prescribed were Blue Mass pills which were actually poisons to consume. Many doctors still believed in a theory called the humorous theory which said that when a person was ill it was because of an imbalance of humors in a person's body.
