In the 1800's the medical field had only male doctors. Most of the time the doctors made home visits if a patient needed medical attention or medicine. Many medicines were chemical or herbal based. Medical schools started to advance in the United States in the early 1800's. Higher leveled medical schools were in Europe most of the time. Women privately took care of only their family members.

Before the Civil War there were only three anatomy laws passed in the United States. Only one of the laws were repealed. In 1831, Massachusetts passed a law that allowed medical schools to have access to bodies of people that have passed away. Only bodies of people that worked in hospitals and workhouses were donated to medical schools if they couldn't afford burials. People were not punished harshly for practicing medicine without a medical license throughout the 1830's. Throughout most of the 1800's medicine very slowly progressed.

The Civil War helped medicine advance widely in the 1900's. Since so many people were getting injured and there were many diseases they needed to find new ways to treat people. Many people believed that you could fully be trained in medicine just by reading books. Pills were available in the 1900's but they were said to be ineffective. A common pill doctors prescribed were Blue Mass pills which were actually poisons to consume. Many doctors still believed in a theory called the humorous theory which said that when a person was ill it was because of an imbalance of humors in a person's body. Later in the 19th century when doctors got a better idea of how the human body functions this theory was not very well known.

During the 1950's there were many advances in finding and curing illness. The first human aorta transplant was performed in 1950. A polio vaccine was developed to be tested on humans. Electric pace makers were also invented in the 1950's. Many doctors spent a lot of time trying to find cures and ways to treat cancer. Tranquilizers became a commonly used drug to cure anxiety. Doctors prescribed it all the time but they weren't aware that many people started to crave the drug. Some health care workers started to worry that the drug was being abused by some people. While many illnesses were being treated and cured mental illness was still a problem that was being ignored.

A cadaver's blood was used for a transfusion for the first time in 1961. Radiation, chemotherapy, and steroids started to be used to help treat leukemia. In 1962, a kidney transplant was preformed with a non-relative donor for the first time. Measles was a disease that affected many people but in 1963 a vaccine was made available. Many other transplants were preformed for the first time throughout the 1960's. Stapling became a popular way of closing incisions after surgery.

Scientist discovered that a way of reducing heart disease was by limiting the amount of cholesterol and saturated fats you consume. In 1982, the first permanent fully artificial heart was implanted into a 61 year old patient. Seven people passed away after taking extra-strength Tylenol for the first time. The first eating disorder treatment center was made in 1985 in Philadelphia. Unfortunately, all 5 people that received an artificial heart throughout the 1980's experienced heart failure.
