Daisy and Gatsby drive in a different car than the others. This triggers Tom who suspects an affair between Gatsby and Daisy. They stop at Wilson’s gas station to get gas for their car and then find out that Wilson knows about Myrtle having an affair. He is unsure who it is with, but wants to move away together with Myrtle and keeps her locked in her room till then. Then they drive away to meet Gatsby and Daisy again in New York. Tom is mad because he realizes that he is endangered to lose both women of his.

In a flashback Michaelis encounter with his neighbour Wilson is described. Wilson had locked his wife inside and later Michaelis witnesses an argument between Wilson and Myrtle before he sees Myrtle running out on the street and getting hit be a car. Tom, Jordan and Nick arrive at the scene of action and Tom suggest to get out and have a look. 
They realise that Myrtle has been killed and Tom tries to find out what happened. When he realises that   Myrtle had been hit by the car Wilson thought to have been Tom’s, he tries to explain to Wilson that it was actually Gatsby’s car in the first place. Tom takes Wilson inside and tries to calm him
When driving back Tom drops his authoritative  behaviour and breaks down, calling Gatsby a coward.

The chapter starts with Nick getting to know that Gatsby has stopped hosting parties and has exchanged all his servants to stop the gossip about Daisy visiting him regularly. Later Nick and Gatsby arrive at the Buchanans house for lunch on a hot summer day. While they are having lunch and also on their way to the car park, it becomes evident that Gatsby and Daisy still love each other and due to Daisy´s indiscreet behaviour about their hidden affair Tom starts realising the truth about their relationship.

Nick tells him that Myrtle was killed and realizes it was not Gatsby but Daisy driving the car. Gatsby is scared of Tom‘s possibly violent behavior against Daisy and decides to observe the situation between Daisy and Tom from outside through the window hiding in the bushes. Fortunately, Tom seems to not know about what happened and the situation inside the house stays calm. Nevertheless, Gatsby decides to wait until Daisy goes to bed.
