(Select 10 items that you would bring that they brought on the expedition)

1) Compass
I would need to know which direction I am going. This would just make traveling easier.

2)Lanterns
This would just make it a lot easier. This would really help during night time or if they discover a dark area like a cave and they need light.

3)Clothes
The clothes would keep me warm in the winter. This would just be important to have because clothes are just a necessity.

4)Medicine
Medicine would be important to bring because if they were to get sick then medicine of course would help. The only thing it would do is help so there is no point in not bringing it.

5)Soup
Soup is definitely needed because you need to eat something. The broth will help if people are sick and it is just a good source of food.

6)Fishing tackle
Fishing tackle would be needed because it is just a good way to get more food. The fishing tackle would be light also and wouldn’t take up much space.

7)Pocket pistols
Pocket pistols should be taken because it is just a way to protect them and keep them safe. So if they got in any trouble they would be able to defend themselves.

8) Dry good
Dry goods would need to be taken because they are another source of food. Also you could carry them with you for a while without them going bad.

9)Gunpowder
They would need gunpowder because they would need to fire their guns and they wouldn’t be able to do that without gunpowder. It would just be useful for trade or protecting yourself.

10)Beads
Beads would really only be useful to trade with the natives. They could use the beads to get something they needed like pots or pans.

(Choose a captain that you would take on the expedition)

Meriwether Lewis was a captain who had a lot of experience. One thing he did was in 1793 he went on an expedition to search for a Northwest passage. By age 26 he had risen to the rank of captain in the First U.S. Infantry Regiment. He was summoned by Thomas Jefferson, the newly-elected third president of the United States, to serve as his personal secretary and aide.

I believe that Meriwether Lewis would be the best captain because he has had a lot of experience and he seems really interested in exploring. He also has lived through many things to help him lead something like this. Thomas Jefferson picked him because he saw something inside of him which would make him a great help and leader. He was born in a time of the new United States so he would probably be very excited to be able to build onto it and be a part of this expedition.

(Choose a Private to take with you on the expedition)

Charbonneau was one of the oldest members of Lewis and Clark's expedition’s permanent party. He would outlive most of his fellows as he followed the rigorous life of a fur trader. The fur trade had put him in place to meet the captains and join their expedition. Charbonneau went to meet the captains and learn what was going on. He offered his services as a Hidatsa translator because his two wives were Shoshones.

Charbonneau would be the best Private to take along the expedition because he had a lot of experience with trading. This would be a big help if he could help trade with the natives. He had been trading furs for several years so he would just be a huge help. Also since he was so old and experienced he would have a lot of wisdom.

(Pick and describe a native american tribe Lewis and Clark encountered)

The Shawnee tribe was located in Logs-town, now part of Pittsburgh. They grew large fields of corn here. On September 19 1803, Lewis stopped writing his Ohio River journal and he likely passed the mouth of the Kanawha River, the site of the Shawnee village. This was the place where Colonel Andrew Lewis established Camp Point Pleasant after his 1774 battle victory in Lord Dunmore's war. During that war, a different Shawnee town was destroyed. The people made peace and agreed to stay north of the Ohio River. Sometime around 5 November 1803, the captains stopped or passed by Old Shawnee Town. That town and Chillicothe had previously served as the capital of the Shawnee nation. As soon as the expedition boats arrived at the Mississippi River, the captains began counting Shawnee people. There are reports that there were about 600 Shawnee people living on the Apple River near Cape Girardeau. The presence of the Americans might have alarmed many of them.

The Shawnee people helped Lewis and Clark because it says that they camped in many of the places which the tribe used to be. Also it says that the tribe was a part of the fur trade so I bet they traded a lot with Lewis and Clark. Logstown is where Shawnee people used to be located at and then it would be the location of intertribal settlements and councils as well as European-based trading posts and military forts.

Animal #1
The first animal I chose that Lewis and Clark discovered is Salmon. They observed and described four different types of salmon unknown to scientists. They were basic foods for thousands upon thousands of Indians west of the Rockies, but also for grizzly bears on the west slope of the Bitterroot Mountains. The explorers' perceptions were necessarily incomplete. They saw these fish for brief periods and only at certain times of the year, yet they were generally accurate as far as they went. These fish spend their adult lives in the Pacific Ocean, then literally sniffing their way up coastal rivers, fighting rapids and leaping falls as much as fifteen feet high, until they reach their natal nesting places.

Their first encounter with the fish was on August 13, 1805 when Lewis was given a piece of a fresh salmon roasted. The article says, “The Captains immediately made important contributions to the forthcoming science of ethnobiology with their detailed descriptions and drawings of the Indians' fish traps (wiers) and spearing (gigging) techniques.” The four that they observed were the Chinook, Sockeye, Coho, and Steelhead. The main use of this animal was just for food.

Animal #2

The last animal I chose to write about is the Elk. One of the animals recorded by Lewis and Clark and which became one of the staples of their mostly carnivorous diet was the Elk or also know was the wapiti. The Corps of Discovery encountered four of the six subspecies the Eastern, Manitoban, Rocky Mountain, and Roosevelt elk. A mature buck elk can stand over five feet tall and weigh more than 600 pounds.

During the Montana portions of the expedition, the journals mention elk 95 times. Most of it is of sightings, or kills, there is also some habitat, grazing patterns, antler development, and the use of elk hides for making clothes, moccasins, and tow ropes. Elk hides were also used to make the skin of Lewis’s iron boat. The expedition’s hunters killed at least 117 elk in Montana. Elk look somewhat like deer and moose. It has large antlers and is in close relation to the red deer.

Plant #1
The first plant I chose was the Mixed grass prairie. Lewis approached the Sun River but he studied the valleys in more detail. He said that the land of neither the plains nor bottoms is fertile.” He also said "It is of a light colour intermixed with a considerable proportion of gravel."The grass averaged only nine inches in height. Some people referred to it as the short grass prairie. The plant ranges from the Rocky Mountain Front to central North Dakota.

Three of the most abundant of species in the mixed grass prairie were blue grama, bluebunch wheatgrass, and needlegrass. Blue Grama consists of leaves up to six inches long, and stems up to 20 inches. Needle-And-Thread Grass is the tallest of the three. I can’t find anything they used the grass for but now its main use is for livestock production.

Plant #2

The second plant I chose that they discovered is the Osage Orange. Its oak-strong, hickory-tough wood made powerful, reliable hunting bows. Many Indians knew and valued this tree for its primary utility in their life ways. The “apples'' on the tree aren’t even edible. Animals such as black tailed deer, fox squirrels, and hares eat the “apple”.

Lewis described the plant “the size of the largest orange, of a globular form, and a fine orange colour." The tree was very hard or tough, it was shaped very weirdly with thorns. The apple on the tree is sticky to the touch, the sap is notoriously bitter, and it can cause severe dermatitis. Osage orange weighs 48.22 pounds per cubic foot. So the main uses of this was the tree was used to make bows and the apple fed many animals.
