The location of the garden, surrounded by buildings, provides a space that gives a sense of refreshment after a long day on the campus. Despite being surrounded by buildings, the garden still provides an open space wherein people in the campus can interact or reflect after classes. As seen in figure 1, the plants, trees, and chairs are arranged in a manner that allows the space to be used in many ways. The garden also provides a space where the students can walk around in order to get to their respective classes.

The arrangement of the trees and the chairs provide a sense of a space that can be used for interaction. The space, which can be considered compact since the chairs are near each other, can be used by the students, teachers, and even visitors to converse or discuss with one another.

The third figure shows the open space where there are no chairs or plants. Since this area is spacious, people can use the said area for various student activities or events. Since the chairs of the garden are also easily moved, the whole garden can easily be arranged in a manner that will allow big events to hold their program in the said location.

The fourth figure shows the chairs located near the edges of the garden. The location of the chairs and the sense of space in this area of the garden provide a place where people can reflect or simply rest and get refreshed by the calmness and subtle wind blowing through the garden.

I believe that the garden can still improve in terms of being proportionate. One of these improvements can be placing tables in the garden or arranging the chairs in a manner that will allow not only for the place to look more proportionate and organized but also for the students to interact without having the hassle to re-arrange the chairs. Another area of improvement can be the planting of more trees. Since there are only 2-3 trees in the garden, adding a few will allow a calmer and more refreshing sense to the open space. Nevertheless, the garden still provides various spaces where its function as an area where people can interact, reflect, and be refreshed, is fulfilled.

The University of Asia and the Pacific or UA&P is located in the heart of Ortigas Center. Surrounded by high rising buildings and limited by space, UA&P is a small campus filled with numerous buildings. Despite having many buildings on the small campus, the university still contains a few open areas. The CAS Garden is one of the few open areas located in UA&P. The said garden is located in between the three academic buildings of UA&P, the ALB, ACB, and CAS building which reflects the purpose and function of the CAS garden.

2) Explaining how the proportion affects the sense of space

Proportion and space are the principles of art that describe the size, location, or amount of one element concerning another. They have a great deal to do with the overall coherence of a space and our perception of the architecture. As a fundamental element in artistic work, proportion and scale are quite complex. There are also many different ways of using them to serve the functions of the space. These are the proportion and scale in art, the proportion of scale of balance and the proportion and beauty.

The CAS Garden serves its purpose to provide a comfortable and refreshing place to hang out with friends after a long day of school work and activities in school. CAS Garden is a place in school that you can feel the nature because of its trees and plants that matches the ambiance of the place. The CAS garden is a perfect example of proportion and beauty related to the organic nature of space because the garden is filled with plants and trees and the arrangement of the chairs provides the sense that can be used for hanging out and interacting with other students.

Interviews:

“I think that the size of CAS garden is good and since it is a garden, it serves its purpose well. It is a space that allows the students to take a breath of fresh air amidst their hectic schedules and enjoy nature. It can be improved, however, with the addition of more plants and flowers to be more aesthetically pleasing and the addition of better chairs for lounging in a public space. Also, a very good upgrade would be the addition of lights across the garden for a more welcoming and pleasant atmosphere, even at night. The lights could be wrapped around the trees or hung across the garden like fairy/christmas lights.”

According to this person, she believes that the CAS garden is a great place for fresh air and to be able to enjoy nature. The space is big enough for people to be able to interact with each other and relax while enjoying nature. The size and proportion of the things in the CAS garden are very well put together although there are some improvements that could be made. I believe that it would be better if there were more flowers since it is important that the CAS garden is pleasing to the eyes since this is where the students, teachers, guests, and staff usually pass by. Also, proper placement of the lights could be made and the choice of lights should be nice as well.

Interviews:

“CAS Garden is one of the only places in the University I enjoy staying at because it is very calming. I feel at ease and it takes of my mind acads when I need a break from school. However, it gets crowded at times. That's when Id rather go some place else.”

According to this interviewee, the CAS Garden is one of her go to places in the university whenever she needs a break from school. And this is something I could agree with, the garden’s open space feature makes it the most appropriate place in the university to catch fresh air because it tends to be crowded in other spaces. And by crowded, it doesn't just mean crowded with people but also the space itself. The university is surrounded by walls, making it a bit hard to relax especially if you are taking a break from academics because it is as if you are still inside a classroom because of the four walls surrounding it. The garden, is one of the few places that will make you feel as if you aren’t being jam-packed with walls because of its open feature. However, I did wish the space of the garden was bigger, as the years go by the university’s community is growing, and the space of the garden feels as if its becoming too small for the school’s population. Along with this, I wish it had more lights so it could be brighter at night making it more pleasing to the eyes and more relaxing to stay in, especially for those who have night classes.
