Address learning difficulties before they become entrenched and lead to other issues such as behavioral and emotional problems.
Teach specific skills and strategies to focus on strengths and minimize, improve, or work around weaknesses.
Improve performance and educational outcomes.

Interventions for learning difficulties should be:

Tailored to each child’s specific learning profile
Evidence-based and high quality
Intensive and frequent
Regularly monitored to assess progress
Structured and challenging – as the child progresses, the material should increase in difficulty

Avoids being called on if they don’t understand the material
They don’t take good notes or have trouble keeping things organized
Distracting others, or the teacher, to get out of doing the work
Does a good job on specific problem sets or pieces of material but often stays there to avoid moving onto material they don’t understand
Irritation and anger (towards teacher, students, even friends)
Using the bathroom for extended periods (to get out of whatever the work is)

Puts hoodie on, sleeps in class, or has head down on desk
Significant apathy or tiredness, even when material previously interested them
Exiting the classroom abruptly and coming back later
Anxious behaviors (tapping feet, biting nails, playing with hands, hair, or clothes, not from boredom)
Change in tone and affect (monotone voice, flat facial expressions)
Wearing the same clothes repeatedly, unwashed or unkempt hair
Irritation and anger (towards teacher, students, even friends)
Using the bathroom for extended periods (avoiding socializing, having trouble with emotion regulation, etc.)
