The main character Slim went to Alaska at the age of 19 in the year 1900. He went there to seek out a life of adventure and to make money trapping animals. While he was trapping, he got a sled and dogs to travel. He then became interested in dog sledding and every aspect of it. The story goes through the trials of living in Alaska and Slim’s adventures of training a dog team to win a big race and eventually learning how to breed the perfect sled dog team by interbreeding wolves with dogs.

The dog team in Alaska Sourdough represent trials and tribulations throughout the book. This is because Slim Williams learns how to handle a dog team through the dogs' death, inter-breeding the dogs with wolves and training them to be a team.

The mountain ranges represent Slim's yearning for an adventure and the freedom to explore the unknown. Just like the mountains, Slim never knew what the next day would look like.

Slims pride affected him by him thinking that he was ready for the mountains when he wasn't. He thought with three dogs that he could make it past the Rangels Mountains. Instead, he ended up drowning his dogs and nearly dying himself in a glacier.

The glaciers represent death and adventure. This is because Slim wanted to explore through the Rangels mountains but instead there was always something stopping him. One example was his dogs drowning causing him to have to reset and make money before trying again.

Slim froze his lungs during a bad storm when he couldn’t make camp. He had to settle for bunking in an old cabin that had poor insulation. He built a fire and had to lay near the roof of the tarp to keep the warm air. He made it through it and remained sick. He went and visited a veterinarian, who told him that an animal that had its lungs freeze would die soon after. Even though he was told that nature had almost won, Slim proved to win over nature.

"The name 'sourdough' became a synonym for those who had lived through their first year in Alaska and remained there,"(Morenus 33).This quote is important because sourdough represents how Slim was determined to be in Alaska. He became an Alaskan sourdough and the book is about his adventures to become one and stay one.

I can relate to the text in the way that Slim never gave up. I admire people who continue through trials. Something that I would do differently is that I want to rely on God during my trials. Slim didn't ever mention his faith.
