<title>I have one graduate student with whom I do not have a strong relationship. This has shaken my confidence in my ability to mentor students. I will be interested to see what others have experienced in this regard and how they dealt with it.</title>

<title>&quot;1. How to reach out to other faculty if you want to be mentored by them? And are faculties open to accepting students that are not their RAs, grad students? The idea is you can have many mentors, and you gain different insights from them.2. Maybe also just getting feedback from your own department on your year&#39;s progress. Something like &quot;&quot;you did good this year, you could also pursue this, try this opportunity, rooms for improvement includes....&quot;&quot; Any thoughts on this?&quot;</title>

<title>Just thought I&#39;d answer your survey, to support the effort but I&#39;ve never had this type of formal relationship in my 20 years at HNEI and really could see the benefit of something like this earlier in my career. I have had &#39;mentors&#39; in the form of my supervisors, but nothing formalized. I feel like I&#39;ve constantly been in survivable mode my whole career, and guidance on aspect specific to succeeding long-term in Hawaii would be useful. </title>

<title>There needs to be better support for incoming students to help them understand what a goes into a mentor-mentee relationship and not just relying on faculty members to define what it looks like. This will help students identify bad advisors earlier on in the relationship and seek out better mentors.</title>

<title>&quot;I think there are at least two aspects that could be replicated from my specific positive experience: 1) the relationship is specifically designed as a mentor/mentee relationship; and 2) my mentor is not my supervisor or involved with my work at all.SOEST can help facilitate match-making of those interested in mentoring and those seeking a mentor. I think this planned panel is also a great start for starting the discussion, learning, and sharing on how to be a helpful mentor.&quot;</title>

<title>UH has internal competition amongst its people. This hurts collaborations and impacts research. There have been strides to reduce this, however, the issue still exists and impacts all relationships (mentor-mentee, peer-to-peer, etc.). Further mixing and encouragement of inter-department, inter-school relationships is needed. Mentor-mentee across campus, disciplines, departments, and schools is an opportunity to further reduce the gender, racial, career-level disparities that exist.</title>

<title>I know it is a long-shot, but we need to change the dynamic between students and advisors. I wish my advisor was more understanding about personal situations that may affect my ability to work, especially during a pandemic. I also wish I had an advisor that respected my personal time outside of work (I do not agree with the &quot;work/school is your life&quot; mentality). I also wish my advisor would not approach conversations about Hawaiian culture with hostility. Luckily I have surrounded myself with mentors who support me in many aspects so that I can turn to them when I need to. SOEST needs to change its overall work culture.</title>

<title>I always wait for students or junior faculty to approach me as everybody has a different &quot;comfort zone&quot;. But once a conversation is started, either setting up a regular schedule or simply checking in with them to show that you are interested is good. SOEST could help by having more &quot;social zooms&quot; where preliminary discussions could be held. Rob Wright does this twice a week with Coffee Hours on Tuesday and Thursday.</title>

<title>I struggle with this question because I think those that want to be good mentors figure out a way...but then I hear from other folks that a new student arrived in September and they have yet to have a zoom chat with their new PhD advisor, or I sit on committees for students and watch their advisors yell at them. I don&#39;t know how to get them to be better mentors when they don&#39;t even realize they are the problem. This is why the idea of an outside committee for each student would be beneficial, so that those that have problems can voice them.</title>

I think it is great that we have Dr Chip Fletcher as a point person on such complaints, and I wonder if it&#39;s possible to have someone for other concerns like bullying, lack of support, etc. </title>

This makes that we both can communicate openly, efficiently and without fear of discussions. My mentor always challenges me to try new things and go for big projects. <title>Postdoc-level research activities are an essential--often dominant--component of many externally-funded projects, so positive mentor-mentee relationships are beneficial to all parties (postdoc, mentor/PI, funder, and SOEST). (Grad-level research is also important for the same reason, I just personally do not have as much mentoring experience in this regard.) </title>

<title>There was a lot of support from the mentor, depending on the situation. They asked about my personal life (not to a point of being too invasive) in order to assess any periods in time when I was less productive without assuming that I was simply procrastinating or being off task. Knowing that they also prioritized my mental and physical health gave me the confidence to communicate when I wasn&#39;t feeling well or up to the challenge and thus expectations on both sides were clear.</title>
