With no authority figure, there was no one to represent the country, and without a national court system, Congress would not be able to bring people to trial. This could have been revised by adding other branches of government like the judicial and executive branches. This would add a part for the president and a part for a Supreme Court. Another weakness of the Articles was that it did not abolish slavery in the colonies. African Americans were still not free, meaning that the colonies were still not a free country. Years later, this would become a large issue. The Articles could have been improved upon to insist on freedom, and it possibly could have allowed slaves to be free. Finally, the most important weakness of the Articles of Confederation was its power to ask for taxes and soldiers, but the colonies had the right to say no. Of course, the colonies wouldn't give up money and soldiers if they didn't have to, so Congress had little money to build roads and pay veterans with, which was the cause of Shay's Rebellion, which demolished the Articles. With no soldiers, the United States could not defend themselves against other nations.
