"When he got bored or was fired or the unpaid bills piled up
too high or the lineman from the electrical company found out he had hotwired our trailer to the utility
poles—or the FBI was closing in—we packed up in the middle of the night and took off, driving until
Mom and Dad found another small town that caught their eye"
pg 19

Explain: Growing up Jeannette would believe all the fantasies her father would tell her to explain the reason they were leaving a certain town. When she got older she began to realize they weren't running from the FBI but bill collectors.
I chose this picture because it shows that her family would pack up what ever they could into their car and move onto the next city.

"The neighbor lady who had driven me to the hospital was surprised that I didn't run in the opposite
direction from any fire I saw. "Why the hell would she?" Dad bellowed with a proud grin. "She already
fought the fire once and won."

Explain: After the whole incident when Jeannette caught on fire and went to the hospital she wasn't scared of fire. It's as if she forgave the fire and became more intrigued with it, lighting things on fire and watching it burn.
I chose this picture because it shows how interesting and simple fire can be which is why Jeannette was so intrigued by it.

"Ask away."
"It's big."
"Just ask, baby."
"I'm scared."
"You know if it's humanly possible, I'll get it for you. And if it ain't humanly possible, I'll die trying."
I looked up at the thin swirls of clouds high in the blue Arizona sky. Keeping my
eyes fastened on those
distant clouds, I took a breath and said. "Do you think you could maybe stop
drinking?"

Explain: Jeannette has this unconditional love for her father and knows that he can change and stop drinking. After their conversation he took her question to heart and tried to stop drinking for his favorite child as her birthday gift.
I chose this picture because Jeannette always thinks of the desert as her home which she has unconditional love for and her father who brought her to the desert.
