1968 -- Federal authorities back out of the investigation without charges being filed.
1971 -- An Alabama attorney reopens the case.
September 26, 1977 -- Robert Chambliss, 73,  former Ku Klux Klan member, is indicted by a Jefferson County grand jury on four counts of first-degree murder.
May 1, 2001 -- Blanton is found guilty of first-degree murder and is sentenced to four life terms.
May 22, 2002 -- Cherry is found guilty and given a sentence of four life terms.

So after the bombing of the 16th Street Baptist Church, FBI had suggested that the KKK was involved. Though repeated calls for the perpetrators to be brought to justice went unanswered for more than a decade. In 1977 the investigation  was reopened and Klan leader Robert E. Chambliss was brought to trial for the bombings and convicted of murder.The case was again reopened in 1980, 1988 and 1997, when two other former Klan members, Thomas Blanton and Bobby Frank Cherry, were finally brought to trial; Blanton was convicted in 2001 and Cherry in 2002.  He joined the United States Marine Corps as a youth, where he gained expertise in demolitions and working with explosives. He was supposed to be on trial earlier than he was but health problems delayed his trial.

He is currently in jail in Alabama. In 2016 he was denied parole.
