4th PERIOD - “The Flowers” is Alice Walker’s shortest short story. There is as much left unsaid in this story as there is stated. Why do you suppose Walker left so much up to the reader to infer rather than including more background on the time and place of the story and the circumstances regarding the death of the man she found in the woods? Write a well-constructed paragraph explaining your answer, supported with evidence from the text. by Kelsey Clark

I believe Walker did this to add a concise, mysterious feel to the story. Seeing as the dead man was random and came about quickly after Myop's: "heel had become lodged," (Walker, 1) in the Man's broken area between his brow and nose.

In the short story "The Flowers" by Alice Walker, she left a lot of details out for the reader to infer. Walker did this because she wanted the reader to develop a bigger picture on the vague story line she provided. An example of this is when Walker describes the corpse Myop found in the woods. She is very descriptive of how he looks, but doesn't involve any details of what happened to him. Walker provided the reader with very little detail, so that the reader could think more and infer what actually happened to the man.

I believe that Alice left so much out of the story because she wanted the people reading to use what they already know about that time period. Like when Myop stepped smacked into the man's eye so Alice wants the readers to infer what had happened to the man or the sharecropper cabin is what freed slaves lived in and paid by the crops they grew. These two details might be reasons why Alice left out a lot of information and made the readers infer more than most authors might have.

Like the author explains Myop going there and seeing the dead body and not truly examining it just kind of looking at it in fear. The author also makes us feel like we are in Myop's shoes by using imagery like " pushed back the leaves and layers of earth and debris. My evidence represents my claim because it i believe it truly and deeply explained why i think the author wrote this story the way she did
