The Syrian Refugee Crisis is the mass displacement of people in civil war-torn Syria. "Syria is the biggest humanitarian and refugee crisis of our time, a continuing cause of suffering for millions which should be garnering a groundswell of support around the world." says Filippo Grandi, the UNHCR High Commissioner for the UN refugee agency. As of 2017, more than 6 million refugees are displaced in their country and more that 5 million are refugees. At least 1.5 million have reached the EU. However, as welcoming as the EU is, there are many migrant fakers, using this as an opportunity to escape their crimes and find new lives in Europe. Being able to pass as a Syrian refugee without the need for proof or any evidence, many get into Europe. They cause chaos and live without rules, giving Syrian refugees a bad reputation and wearing out the EU welcome. In the Washington Post, a refugee speaks about what he thinks of the fakers: "Look at these people, what are they doing here? We are the ones who are fleeing from war and slaughter, and now these men are taking away our space,” said Mustafa, 62, from Syria, who is actually fleeing from war and violence of the civil war.

It all started in 2011, with the protests of the arrest and torture of a group of teenagers writing anti-government graffiti during the Arab Spring. The uprising spread as many Syrians were fed-up and frustrated with their government. When President Bashar al-Assad responded with military intervention, this started the Syrian Civil war, with civilian militias uniting to rebel against the regime. The ongoing 6 years of violence would result in the fleeing of millions of Syrians. The introduction of ISIS and many other groups in the war is only elongating the war and has led to sectarian violence between the Sunni and Shia sects of Islam, as well as air strikes and bombardments. These reasons have led to refugees flooding neighboring countries by the millions, sometimes by illegal means.

The numbers of refugees now in the neighboring countries are Turkey, with 2.5 million, Lebanon ,with 1 million, Jordan, with 623,000, Egypt, with 123,500, and Iraq, with 245,000. Currently, many live in refugee camps set up by the countries' governments, with some integrating into society. The EU's welcome to refugees has integrated about 1.5 million as of 2015, with most located in Germany, Sweden, Hungary and France. This welcome, however, may not last long, with the rise of migrant crime. The sexual assaults, refugee attacks and rapes on the host countries' people has escalated tensions between the refugees and Natives. In Germany, where Chancellor Angela Merkel has opened borders for all refugees, the Cologne rapes and the murder of 19-year-old Maria Ladenburger, a medical student by an Afghan refugee have raised tensions between Right-wing Germans and and left-wing Germans, siding with the refugees. This, as well as many high profile crimes in Sweden, has cause EU backlash against refugees.

Refugees can register for resettlement with the UN, but the process is long, usually taking up to 2 years. This is a legal way to gain resettlement, but it is a long process. This begins with moving to a safer country, such as Turkey and Lebanon before transitioning to the EU. Another method to get to safety involves crossing border fences into the EU. Refugees can attempt to cross the border with numbers, overwhelming border guards. Failed attempts can lead to injury or death. Many EU countries have stepped up border control and it is now more difficult. Another way to get to a safe country is to have smugglers and trafficker get them to the EU. They are put into un-seaworthy boats and sent across the Mediterranean Sea. Many die on this journey, but as soon as they reach the EU, sometimes with help from European coast guards, nearly all illegal refugees will be legalized under EU law. In turn, it could be said that the EU encourages illegal immigration over legal means.

The Syrian Refugee crisis affects the world in that the middle East has become more unstable and that Europe is unprepared for an influx of Syrian Refugees. This has destabilized and affects the unity of the EU and has led to the creation of even more border protection, to slow the flow of refugees. The acceptance of Syrian Refugees in Middle Eastern countries has has led to conflict and ethnic tension. The US is affected in that we are accepting some refugees, with about 67,000 admitted and permanently resettled. The US is also the largest donor in humanitarian aid.

An international aid organization active in the Syrian Refugee crisis is the UNHCR and the United Nations Refugee Agency(http://www.unhcr.org/en-us/syria-emergency.html). These UN groups provide humanitarian aid to refugees, supply money and supplies to cover their needs. “They gave us biscuits, cheese, dates, dry meat – all very nice... And they gave us mats, blankets and kitchenware.” says Fayzeh, mother of three at Jordan’s Zaatari refugee camp in a quote from the UNHCR.
Another international aid organization is the International Rescue Committee(https://www.rescue.org/topic/refugees-america). This organization helps resettle refugees and provides food, housing and medical attention in the US. Resettlement officer across the US help refugees adjust to life in their new country and get them settled down and working.
How we the people can help is to volunteer and donate to these aid organizations.

Syria's Civil war is a bloody mess of violence and sectarian violence, of which many Civilians are trapped between.I believe that Syrian refugees are welcome, but those not fleeing war are not. There should be a better system to this than just to open up the borders. I feel that the EU is just kicking itself by allowing all of them in, without any real screenings of identification. They should also discourage illegal ways of entering the EU, rather than just legalizing them all. The legal way should also be faster, with claims taking up to 2 years.
