At the camp something tragic has happened to the family. Mack's youngest daughter, Missy, has been abducted during the family vacation. Evidence had showed that Missy had been brutally murdered and is found abandoned in the shack.

The family tragedy, causes Mack to become depressed which causes him to question his beliefs in Papa (God). He receives a mysterious letter that tells him to return back to the Oregon wilderness where the shack was at. Mack returns to the shack, but is doubtful about it. He then encounters a trio of strangers led by a woman named Papa.

Throughout the story, Mack is learning the truth that is found important. This events later would transform  his understanding of the tragedy. He had mocked Papa about that the bible states that he would be there in every problem,but wasn't there when Missy needed her help from her death. Mack began to judge other, which in thought was not very good because he believed certain people shouldn't go to heaven, but to hell instead for the sin they had committed. Throughout the story different (Gods) had a lesson that would soon help Mack with his faith , which I felt was a good thing. Mack is trying to figure out why Papa let Missy die, but Papa just want Mack to not worry about it, but just trust what Papa has in stored for Mack and his family.

Wisdom: Why are you surprised? You spent your whole life judging everyone… Choose one of your children to go to Heaven and one to go to Hell… because that’s what you think God does.

This is important because then he has to choose which of his children should go to heaven and hell, since he's judges others of their actions.
